Tips For Feeding Baby
I remember starting our daughter on cereal for the first time when she turned 4 months old. She didn’t care for the rice, however was a huge fan of oatmeal. From there, things got more interesting as we embarked on the journey of eating vegetables and fruits. It was fun to see her eyes light up and hear her hum while she ate the foods that she loved.
Using a spoon for the first time was a challenge for the both of us. We even tried several brands of spoons until we successfully found one that she could eat from the best. Through much trial and error, we developed a feeding routine that worked for our family and our daughter liked being a “big girl” eating at the table with mommy and daddy.
I’ve put together a list of tips that I felt that I learned about feeding time.
- Always keep a damp washcloth ready! As baby learns more arm control, expect at least one instance of a flying bowl!
- Remember to introduce new foods one at a time and watch for possible food allergies. Some foods would give my daughter diaper-rash and peaches would give her pink cheeks, so we held off on those and reintroduced them when she was older.
- If baby doesn’t like a particular food, try introducing it again at a later date. As the taste buds learn about new foods, baby might decide that things are good the second time around!
- Make feeding time fun. This is a great bonding time between you and baby and a great time for baby to learn how to get food into their mouth. Messes are acceptable and, in some instances, highly encouraged. We used to like to make airplane noises and motions for our daughter to eat off her spoon.
Baby food comes in so many container options these days. Jars are an old favorite (and fun to keep for crafting), plastic containers and now – pouches! I’m not sure who came up with the idea of putting foods in a pouch, but it was genius! I love these because they are low mess. I remember back to when my daughter started to get older and became more resilient. She used to bite down on the spoon and wouldn’t let go! I think pouches would have allowed her an easier way of controlling how much food she got and the frequency at which she got it.
Please enjoy this fun video by Plum Organics. The video features a baby in a PacMan type of game who is on the quest to find yummy foods. Baby meets some yucky foods along the way also! Much like some they may come into contact with while at home. My favorite part is watching the baby grow with the more yummy food baby eats. My daughter loved this video and laughed when she watched it! She loves watching other babies in action!
