Hands down THE BEST Rice Krispie Treats EVER! These treats are not your back-of-the-box, plain ole’ treats. These ooey gooey treats are perfection that you can’t resist!
I got tired of my rice krispie treats scraping the top of my mouth. You know what I am talking about, they can be dry and hard to chew sometimes.
Don’t worry, I have solved the problem!
After few trials with a couple of ideas I have seen, I came up with the Best Rice Krispie Treat Recipe EVER! You will love them, trust me.
How To Make Rice Krispie Treats
The secret is adding milk. It makes the melted marshmallows creamier and easier to coat the cereal.
I also used more marshmallows than I normally have. I split the marshmallows up as well so they are not all melted at once.
I don’t fully melt the second batch of marshmallows and that is what gives you pockets of ooey gooey marshmallow goodness.
The BEST Rice Krispie Treat Recipe EVER! It is ooey Gooey Perfection! When making these treats, I always use Kellogg’s Rice Krispies and Jet-Puffed Mini Marshmallows. I have not had a bad experience with either product.
Another thing I have learned, use Pyrex dishes that come with lids. Easy to put away! No messing with cling wrap.
Using a good spatula sprayed with non-stick spray will help you get the treats evenly spread throughout the dish without getting sticky.

Description
The BEST Rice Krispie Treat Recipe EVER! These treats are ooey gooey goodness!
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons of butter
- 8 cups of mini marshmallows
- 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon of milk
- 6 cups of Rice Krispie Cereal
Instructions
- Slowly melt the butter in a large pan, low heat.
- Once butter is melted, add vanilla and 6 cups of marshmallows. Melt the marshmallows slowly.
- Right before the marshmallows are fully melted, add milk and the other 2 cups of marshmallows. Stir until the added marshmallows are starting to melt. (we don’t want them fully melt so you will have a lumpy fluff)
- Add the Rice Krispie Cereal. Stir until the cereal is fully coated with the marshmallow fluff.
- Dump into an 8 x 11 greased dish. Use a greased spatula to spread out the treats and press down just a bit (you don’t want them to so compact that they become rock hard).
- Allow to fully cool before cutting and serving.
Notes
Depending on how you cut the treats will determine how many a batch will make.

Debra W says
I like marshmallow squares…a lot…in fact, I try to not make them because I know who will eat them… I like mine gooey too, but I follow the regular recipe, and then, as I am mixing the mallows into the crispies I add a couple handfuls of mini coloured marshmallows. Now the pockets of ooey-gooey are also flavored 🙂
Jessica says
I have a question. How long are the Rice Krispies supposed to cool for? Mine taste stale, but cereal was brand new and fresh. They are still gooey, but stale.
Devon says
They don’t take too long. Just till they are cool to the touch. 10 – 15 minutes.
Makenna says
You forgot to specify if you used salted or unsalted butter.
devon says
Sorry, I used salted stick butter.
Justin says
You always use salted when your baking. Come on now.
AB says
I didn’t know that. I’m glad some one asked.
Morgan says
I didn’t know that either…. but is this considered baking?? Technically nothing is ongoing in he oven….
chris garrison says
I’m not a professional but generally when baking use unsalted butter.
Colette says
Most baking recipes I have made specify using unsalted butter. And salt is often in the recipes added at 1/8-1/4 tsp. I accidentally used salted butter for oatmeal cookies a few months ago and I could definitely taste the salt. Admittedly, I used to only used salted butter. High blood pressure in the family changed that and I watch the salt in all my cooking now, thus it is more noticeable to me.
Jackie says
It’s best to check the recipes – most of the recipes I use call for unsalted.
Cindy says
I agree, most baking recipes I’ve seen and used I have to buy unsalted butter.
Vicki says
I always buy unsalted butter. The recipe is excellent with unsalted butter
Amy says
Actually, Jason, most bakers specify UNsalted butter is best for baking
Holli says
Yes you are right Amy. I have many recipes that call for unsalted butter.
Tara says
Most baking recipes add salt so using unsalted butter will get you the real results! Using salted butter adds even more salt than asked for!
Ally says
When using Salted butter, DON’T add the salt. I always use Salted butter when baking but skip the salt, tastes totally fine and a lot of people like our cookies this way better 🙂
Ted says
It should be “you’re baking.” Come on now.
kiese7 says
I don’t and neither do professional chefs. I alway use unsalted for one can tell more easily if it is rancid.
Deb says
I disagree with you Justin, Unsalted butter is used in almost all baking because you can manage the salt content better. You cannot do this with salted butter.

Stacy says
I’ve never made Rice Krispie treats for whatever reason, I love them so thanks for such an easy recipe. My boys will test to see how I did
devon says
Hi Stacy! Let me know how it goes! My boys love them. My oldest has been asking me to make more!
Missa says
Does this recipe allow for the treat to hold its shape? I’m making 50 star shaped treats for a party Saturday and I’m going to put them on popsicle sticks. I love the idea of a softer treat, the regular recipe hurts the roof of my mouth.
devon says
Hi Missa! I haven’t tried to make shapes with the recipe. That was next on my plate actually. When I cut them into squares they stayed, however, I am not sure they would stay on a Popsicle stick. If you try it, I would wait a while before cutting them into shapes and putting them on the sticks. (Maybe an hour or 2)
Sandi says
I am making these today, I have two men in my life who are big Kids and live them…..taking on a road trip..I let you know how they enjoy them.
★★★★★
Lindsey says
I too add more marshmallows, its a must! My little secret to make them even more scrumptious is browning the butter before adding the marshmallows. Try it 🙂
Miranda M. says
What tempature do you set oven to?
devon says
Miranda,
You do not put these treats in the oven.
Miranda M. says
I just realized that. Sorry for the stupid question. But thanks for QUICK response. Happy Mothers day!
devon says
That is okay. There are no stupid questions. 🙂 Have a great day!
Linda L says
8 cups of mini or regular size marshmallows?
devon says
Mini. I will change the recipe to reflect this. Sorry about that.
Sue says
I have to say, using half mini and half large marshmallows you get not too gooey and not too dry….Just right!
Morgan says
If I only have regular sized marshmallows, how would I adjust the amount?
devon says
Try these conversions:
13 oz Marshmallow Creme = approximately 3 cups.
1 Regular Marshmallow = 13 Miniature Marshmallows.
8 Regular Marshmallows = 1 cup.
16 oz bag Miniature = 8 cups.
Kristyne says
I’m having a mom brain moment but with a 10oz bag of regular marshmallows… Should I just half everything else?
devon says
I always have mom brain moments. HA! Lets see…..Going to sound strange, but how many regular marshmallows are in your 10 oz bag? If you have 64 marshmallows you can do the recipe normally. If not, half the recipe would be 32 marshmallows. Does that make sense?
Sara says
Hi! Your recipe looks fabulous, I just finished making them and I will wait to cut them in the morning. Hopefully they turn out great!
Thanks for posting!
devon says
You’re Welcome! Hope you like them!
Kathy Miller says
When I was in grade school the ladies in the kitchen would sometimes add a little peanut butter which really brought out a great flavor! Great unless someone is allergic to peanuts. We all loved them that way!
Alice says
Can you add chocolate chips, mini M&M’s or other little add ins? If so any idea at what point you would add them? Thanks!
devon says
Oooooo….you add ins sound yummy! I would say add them in as you add in the cereal. You don’t want them to completely melt. I may have to try this out!
Sharon says
I’ve tried add-ins mixed in with the cereal and they get kind of melty. I like to sprinkle mini chocolate chips or mini M&M’s on top. Colored sprinkles are pretty, too. Press them down slightly with a spatula. They look and taste great!
Marilyn says
These are so yummy., just made them. I’m using this recipe to also make them with the chocolate Rice Krispies. Also going to try to make a reg one with some Nutella added into them. My son loves chocolate so I try to add nutela to stuff that way he gets the choc flavor and the protein as well 🙂
★★★★★
devon says
Awesome! I bet the nutella will taste great!
Hannah says
My kids and I just made these for Father’s Day, can’t wait to try them! Should they be stored in the refrigerator? It’s a surprise for their daddy tomorrow.
devon says
How fun! He will love them!
When we stored them we just covered them and left them on the counter. No refrigerator needed. (It may turn them into hard treats.)
Maria says
About to try this easily to follow recipe! 🙂 quick question, would you consider it’d be ok to do them an entire day before, or would that compromise the softness of our treats?
devon says
You should be fine to make them a day ahead. I admit that I have forgotten to cover them and the next day they were still good and soft. 🙂
Darika says
Hi this recipe looks great. About how many treats does this recipe make?
devon says
I think I cut 12 out, but I made them larger. It really depends on how you cut them.
Allison says
Does the milk prevent the Rice Krispie treats from being able to be left out? I feel like they’ll harden too much in the fridge. I made them and they look delicious; waiting to dig in!
devon says
I have not put them in the fridge after making them. I just cover and leave them on the counter.
J J says
Thanks for your neat recipe. My grandchildren are allergic to milk. I use margarine that is milk free. Do you think I could use soy milk in these?
devon says
You could try it. I have not made them that way so unsure how they would turn out.
Laurie says
We are using large marshmallows & going to cut them into smaller pieces for easier melting (what we had on hand) and just wanted to share this in case anyone is doing the same…Easier to go by ounces than cups.
This is from the Kraft website:
13 oz Marshmallow Creme = approximately 3 cups.
1 Regular Marshmallow = 13 Miniature Marshmallows.
8 Regular Marshmallows = 1 cup.
16 oz bag Miniature = 8 cups.
😉 Happy baking(ish)!
Chrissy says
Just made your recipe and they turned out excellent! DELICIOUS and so gooey! My only complaint, if you can call it that, is these won’t last long in our house! 😀 Thanks for sharing this recipe with us!
★★★★★
Stephanie says
Made these today and I don’t know if I did something wrong but I followed the recipe to the letter…they have a great flavor but they have the texture of bubblegum, very rubbery…they never stiffened up and they almost taste stale, even though it was a new box of crisp rice. I think I’ll try making them again but add more rice krispies to soak up some of the gooey marshmallow mixture.
devon says
Stephanie,
They should be soft but stay together. They don’t get real hard.
Tracy says
I just made these…. same thing – very chewy. Only think I can think of is that maybe to take the pot off the burner (once the butter, marshmallows, and vanilla are gooey) and mix the rice krispies in then.
cheryl says
I just made these. I added a heaping teaspoon of Apple pie spice to the butter and vanilla. Yummy. Next I want to try pumpkin pie spice.
★★★★★
devon says
YUM! That sounds really good!
Mary says
I make krispie treats all the time but have never used vanilla and milk. To keep mine soft abs chewy I use extra butter melted in with the marshmallows.
Meg says
How much marshmallows would you use if using normal/regular size marshmallows?
devon says
Meg,
These are what I consider regular marshmallow size (which are the mini). Is this what size you are thinking?
Emilie says
Good Morning! If i dont have the mini marshmallow, how many cups of regular size marshallow can i use?
devon says
I have not used the large marshmallows. I believe the 8 cups is equal to 16 oz bag of marshmallows. Maybe weight it out so the marshmallows weight the same.
Libbey Melliez says
I’m going to ado green food coloring and sprinkles. I’ll cut them into triangles for Christmas trees. Our cook at school added pumpkin puree and cinnamon in November. They were great! Thanks
devon says
Awesome! Those both sound delicious!!!
lea says
Silly question, if they have milk in them, how are they safe to leave out of the fridge if the milk isn’t even cooked or anything.
devon says
You can place them in the fridge.
Mary Jane says
I make mine oooey gooey also….but go one step further to add toffee chips to the hot marshmallow mix right before pouring over the RK. DO NOT use the ones with chocolate also, just the toffee chips. They are to die for!!!!!
devon says
That sounds AWESOME! Thanks for the tip!
Annie says
I used your recipe and had to combine it with the original treats recipe found on Kellogg’s website. Thank you so much for posting this. I tried it for the first time ever and it looks yummy.
I’m not a fan of too much sweet, but I can’t say no to these little squares.
I used un-salted butter, 10 oz (1 whole bag) of the jet-puffed marshmallows and they look great, but tasted a tad too sweet. So I’m unsure if I used too much marshmallows or not, but they look great =)
devon says
Hopefully they turned out great! 🙂
Tara says
If I made these today, would they be good for Christmas?
devon says
If you did make them today, they may not be as soft on Christmas but I bet they would still taste good.
Tara says
Thank you!!! I’ll probably do them Christmas Eve then!
Thank you and merry Christmas!
devon says
Merry Christmas Tara! Enjoy!
Hope says
These look great! Do I have to use vanilla? My husband is allergic…
devon says
I think you could make it without. I have not done that so not sure how it would alter the taste. Give it a try and let me know. 🙂
Carolyn says
Do they then have to be kept cold due to having milk in them?
I usually add extra marshmallow;)
devon says
I just cover them and leave out on the counter. I don’t but them in the fridge.
Juanita says
Can they be frozen.
Juanita says
When you say grease the pan and spatula, what kind of grease are you talking about???? Crisco, spray Pam, butter? Thanks
devon says
I used spray Pam
devon says
I have never put them in the freezer so I don’t know how they will do.
Jodi says
Have you used the large marshmallows? If so, what’s the amount difference?
devon says
I have not use the big marshmallows. You can try these conversions:
Try these conversions:
13 oz Marshmallow Creme = approximately 3 cups.
1 Regular Marshmallow = 13 Miniature Marshmallows.
8 Regular Marshmallows = 1 cup.
16 oz bag Miniature = 8 cups.
Ewa Kurek says
8 cups mini marshmallows how many oz? Is the 10 oz of marshmallows enough? Thank you
devon says
It is a 16 oz bag. 🙂
Alison says
I haven’t made or eaten Rice Krispie Treats in a long time and I just got a craving so I tried your recipe. I also thought a RK Treat is a RK Treat. Wrong! I quietly made these and put them aside. After a while my husband came to me and said, “I can’t quit eating these” Later, my teenage daughter came to me and said they were delicious and please keep the recipe. A day later she had friends over and they all went crazy over them too. So I would say this recipe is a definite keeper! These definitely put other Rice Krispie Treats to shame. Thanks for sharing.

devon says
Awesome! I am so glad to hear everyone loved them!
Nicole says
Hi Do you have a recipie for fruity pebbles Rice Krispie treats?
devon says
Sorry, I don’t. However, I did have the thought yesterday when I was at the store. When I got back I will have to pick some up and try it.
Nicole says
I made these today and they turned out really chewy. What could I have done wrong? ????
devon says
Hmmmm, I am not sure. If you think they are too chewy, maybe cut out a bit of Marshmallow?
Jenny Whitaker says
Totally lives up to the name – this IS the best recipe EVER! I have made it multiple times and they always come out fantastic!! Thank you!
★★★★★
Andrea says
I JUST finished making these and then read through all the comments. I’m just wondering how long I have to wait before I can eat them?! They look amazing, they smell even better and I’m pretty sure my son is trying to lick them since I told him no touching.
devon says
If they feel cool to you, go ahead and cut into them! 🙂 We don’t wait very long around here, we are too eager to eat them.
Ashleigh says
Would you be able to use this recipe for moulding cups out of?
devon says
You may be able to do that. I honestly have not tried. I used a slightly different recipe to make my bird nests… They were not as soft, feel free to try and come back and let us know!
Alessandra says
If I am using a cookie cutter, do I wait for the dish to cool off before cutting or is it better to do when it’s warm?
devon says
Hello Alessandra. I believe I wait about 10 minutes or so before I start cutting shapes out. That way it has set up a bit.
Melissa says
I made these with jumbo marshmallows @ 10 jumbo=1 cup mini. Added chocolate chips too! Super Good!
Laura De Nuntiis says
I’ve had to make the day before so how would it be best to keep?
devon says
I would store in an air tight container. I used my pyrex dishes that come with lids.
Laura De Nuntiis says
I’ve had to make these yesterday for a party today. How do you suggest they best be kept.
★★★★★
devon says
I would store in an air tight container. I used my pyrex dishes that come with lids.
Kate says
These look absolutely incredible! I’m going to try them with other cereals too.
How long do you think these can keep without going too hard? Long enough to ship for two days if I wrap them really well in Seran Wrap and put them in an airtight container? (Long distance birthdays are the worst!)
★★★★★
devon says
Kate, Sorry you had to wait so long for a response. I am traveling and just got settled at a hotel. You should be fine for a couple days if you mail them. 🙂 I hope they enjoy them! And Yes, Long distance parties are the worst!
Alicia says
When I originally saw the post (not sure when but it has been quite some time), I thought for sure this couldn’t be “the best” one out there. I mean these treats are a serious food memory from my childhood. That being said…. they truly are THE BEST I’ve ever had and/or made!!! The milk makes the difference! As I have gone thru other recipes, even made them the way they’ve said to when there were other flavors involved. I keep going back to your base recipe EVERY time! Thank you for sharing, as I continue to share your post with others when they ask how I’ve made mine!
Side note: Recently we made this with Honey Nut Cheerios and they were a hug even hit!!
★★★★★
devon says
Alicia, I am so glad you love this recipe! Yum! The Cheerios sounds pretty good too! Thank you for coming by and sharing your story!
Niki says
Have you made these with the chocolate rice crispies? They were what was on sale.
devon says
I have not but I bet the will be ok. Maybe a bit sweeter than the regular Rice Krispie Treat Flavor.
Kayla says
Would these be ok if I cut them out in a heart and dipped in chocolate? Would they hold there shape?
★★★★★
devon says
Yes, I have cut them into heart shapes before and I have also dipped them in candy melts. The hearts kept their shape. Just make sure they are fully cooled before cutting them.
Vicky Kulak says
Thank you for this!! I can make fantastic layered squares that take forever to make . Harder the squares or bar is I can do it with ease…. but rice crispy squares completely undo me, I have to buy them
at the store for the kids! LMAO Friends think it’s funny I sell my baking to customers and can’t make this square. Kids had it for afternoon snack and loved them then asked who made them.
★★★★★
Sara says
I’m planning on making these for vacation bible school and want to add green food coloring so the kids can shape them into trees. If I made them the day before ( like around 10 am) do you think they will still be able to mold them the next morning? Trying to figure out if I can do a make ahead or not!
devon says
Hi! If I am making shapes, I usually make them the same day that I make the treats. If you are using cookie cutters, waiting a day may be ok.
Samantha M. says
I am planning on make these on a Wednesday night for a party on Saturday. Is there any way to keep these fresh for a couple days?
devon says
Hello! Wednesday may be a bit far out to make the treats. Is there any way you could make then possibly Friday night? That would be more ideal. They don’t take much time to make.
C says
I know you said you didn’t refrigerate. Since there is milk in the recipe, shouldn’t they be refrigerated? Just curious. I know what you mean though, they probably will firm up too much if you refrigerate.
Devon says
We don’t put ours in the refrigerator. However, if you are more comfortable, you can put them in fridge. Just a warning, they will be firm if you do. I have not had a problem with them being out but choose what you think is best in your environment.
cecelia k. says
In my house, these treat don’t get eaten unless they have peanut butter. I just throw in a heaping spoonful along with the melted marshmallows before mixing. YUMMMMMMMMY !!!!!
Mknette Satterwhite says
I bought the big marshmallows. Do I just make s’mores and go back to the store, or can I use them? If so, how much/many?
★★★★★
Devon says
You could try them with the big ones, I just haven’t made them that way. I would get a kitchen scale out and measure out 160z of them.
Melissa says
Came out perfect. Recipe is spot on. Thank you for sharing.
