Hands down THE BEST Rice Krispie Treats EVER! These treats are not your back-of-the-box, plain ole’ treats. These ooey gooey treats are perfection that you can’t resist!

I got tired of my rice krispie treats scraping the top of my mouth. You know what I am talking about, they can be dry and hard to chew sometimes.

Don’t worry, I have solved the problem!

After few trials with a couple of ideas I have seen, I came up with the Best Rice Krispie Treat Recipe EVER! You will love them, trust me.

How To Make Rice Krispie Treats

The secret is adding milk. It makes the melted marshmallows creamier and easier to coat the cereal.

I also used more marshmallows than I normally have. I split the marshmallows up as well so they are not all melted at once.

I don’t fully melt the second batch of marshmallows and that is what gives you pockets of ooey gooey marshmallow goodness.

When making these treats, I always use Kellogg’s Rice Krispies and Jet-Puffed Mini Marshmallows. I have not had a bad experience with either product.

Another thing I have learned, use Pyrex dishes that come with lids. Easy to put away! No messing with cling wrap.

Using a good spatula sprayed with non-stick spray will help you get the treats evenly spread throughout the dish without getting sticky.

Description

The BEST Rice Krispie Treat Recipe EVER! These treats are ooey gooey goodness!


Scale

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • 8 cups of mini marshmallows
  • 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon of milk
  • 6 cups of Rice Krispie Cereal

Instructions

  1. Slowly melt the butter in a large pan, low heat.
  2. Once butter is melted, add vanilla and 6 cups of marshmallows. Melt the marshmallows slowly.
  3. Right before the marshmallows are fully melted, add milk and the other 2 cups of marshmallows. Stir until the added marshmallows are starting to melt. (we don’t want them fully melt so you will have a lumpy fluff)
  4. Add the Rice Krispie Cereal. Stir until the cereal is fully coated with the marshmallow fluff.
  5. Dump into an 8 x 11 greased dish. Use a greased spatula to spread out the treats and press down just a bit (you don’t want them to so compact that they become rock hard).
  6. Allow to fully cool before cutting and serving.

Notes

Depending on how you cut the treats will determine how many a batch will make.

      I like marshmallow squares…a lot…in fact, I try to not make them because I know who will eat them… I like mine gooey too, but I follow the regular recipe, and then, as I am mixing the mallows into the crispies I add a couple handfuls of mini coloured marshmallows. Now the pockets of ooey-gooey are also flavored 🙂

        I have a question. How long are the Rice Krispies supposed to cool for? Mine taste stale, but cereal was brand new and fresh. They are still gooey, but stale.

          They don’t take too long. Just till they are cool to the touch. 10 – 15 minutes.

              Most baking recipes I have made specify using unsalted butter. And salt is often in the recipes added at 1/8-1/4 tsp. I accidentally used salted butter for oatmeal cookies a few months ago and I could definitely taste the salt. Admittedly, I used to only used salted butter. High blood pressure in the family changed that and I watch the salt in all my cooking now, thus it is more noticeable to me.

          Most baking recipes add salt so using unsalted butter will get you the real results! Using salted butter adds even more salt than asked for!

            When using Salted butter, DON’T add the salt. I always use Salted butter when baking but skip the salt, tastes totally fine and a lot of people like our cookies this way better 🙂

          I disagree with you Justin, Unsalted butter is used in almost all baking because you can manage the salt content better. You cannot do this with salted butter.

      Does this recipe allow for the treat to hold its shape? I’m making 50 star shaped treats for a party Saturday and I’m going to put them on popsicle sticks. I love the idea of a softer treat, the regular recipe hurts the roof of my mouth.

        Hi Missa! I haven’t tried to make shapes with the recipe. That was next on my plate actually. When I cut them into squares they stayed, however, I am not sure they would stay on a Popsicle stick. If you try it, I would wait a while before cutting them into shapes and putting them on the sticks. (Maybe an hour or 2)

            Try these conversions:
            13 oz Marshmallow Creme = approximately 3 cups.
            1 Regular Marshmallow = 13 Miniature Marshmallows.
            8 Regular Marshmallows = 1 cup.
            16 oz bag Miniature = 8 cups.

              I always have mom brain moments. HA! Lets see…..Going to sound strange, but how many regular marshmallows are in your 10 oz bag? If you have 64 marshmallows you can do the recipe normally. If not, half the recipe would be 32 marshmallows. Does that make sense?

      When I was in grade school the ladies in the kitchen would sometimes add a little peanut butter which really brought out a great flavor! Great unless someone is allergic to peanuts. We all loved them that way!

          I’ve tried add-ins mixed in with the cereal and they get kind of melty. I like to sprinkle mini chocolate chips or mini M&M’s on top. Colored sprinkles are pretty, too. Press them down slightly with a spatula. They look and taste great!

      These are so yummy., just made them. I’m using this recipe to also make them with the chocolate Rice Krispies. Also going to try to make a reg one with some Nutella added into them. My son loves chocolate so I try to add nutela to stuff that way he gets the choc flavor and the protein as well 🙂

      We are using large marshmallows & going to cut them into smaller pieces for easier melting (what we had on hand) and just wanted to share this in case anyone is doing the same…Easier to go by ounces than cups.

      This is from the Kraft website:
      13 oz Marshmallow Creme = approximately 3 cups.
      1 Regular Marshmallow = 13 Miniature Marshmallows.
      8 Regular Marshmallows = 1 cup.
      16 oz bag Miniature = 8 cups.

      Made these today and I don’t know if I did something wrong but I followed the recipe to the letter…they have a great flavor but they have the texture of bubblegum, very rubbery…they never stiffened up and they almost taste stale, even though it was a new box of crisp rice. I think I’ll try making them again but add more rice krispies to soak up some of the gooey marshmallow mixture.

        I just made these…. same thing – very chewy. Only think I can think of is that maybe to take the pot off the burner (once the butter, marshmallows, and vanilla are gooey) and mix the rice krispies in then.

      I make krispie treats all the time but have never used vanilla and milk. To keep mine soft abs chewy I use extra butter melted in with the marshmallows.

        I have not used the large marshmallows. I believe the 8 cups is equal to 16 oz bag of marshmallows. Maybe weight it out so the marshmallows weight the same.

      I make mine oooey gooey also….but go one step further to add toffee chips to the hot marshmallow mix right before pouring over the RK. DO NOT use the ones with chocolate also, just the toffee chips. They are to die for!!!!!

      I used your recipe and had to combine it with the original treats recipe found on Kellogg’s website. Thank you so much for posting this. I tried it for the first time ever and it looks yummy.
      I’m not a fan of too much sweet, but I can’t say no to these little squares.
      I used un-salted butter, 10 oz (1 whole bag) of the jet-puffed marshmallows and they look great, but tasted a tad too sweet. So I’m unsure if I used too much marshmallows or not, but they look great =)

      I haven’t made or eaten Rice Krispie Treats in a long time and I just got a craving so I tried your recipe. I also thought a RK Treat is a RK Treat. Wrong! I quietly made these and put them aside. After a while my husband came to me and said, “I can’t quit eating these” Later, my teenage daughter came to me and said they were delicious and please keep the recipe. A day later she had friends over and they all went crazy over them too. So I would say this recipe is a definite keeper! These definitely put other Rice Krispie Treats to shame. Thanks for sharing.

        You may be able to do that. I honestly have not tried. I used a slightly different recipe to make my bird nests… They were not as soft, feel free to try and come back and let us know!

      If I am using a cookie cutter, do I wait for the dish to cool off before cutting or is it better to do when it’s warm?

        Hello Alessandra. I believe I wait about 10 minutes or so before I start cutting shapes out. That way it has set up a bit.

      I made these with jumbo marshmallows @ 10 jumbo=1 cup mini. Added chocolate chips too! Super Good!

      These look absolutely incredible! I’m going to try them with other cereals too.

      How long do you think these can keep without going too hard? Long enough to ship for two days if I wrap them really well in Seran Wrap and put them in an airtight container? (Long distance birthdays are the worst!)

        Kate, Sorry you had to wait so long for a response. I am traveling and just got settled at a hotel. You should be fine for a couple days if you mail them. 🙂 I hope they enjoy them! And Yes, Long distance parties are the worst!

      When I originally saw the post (not sure when but it has been quite some time), I thought for sure this couldn’t be “the best” one out there. I mean these treats are a serious food memory from my childhood. That being said…. they truly are THE BEST I’ve ever had and/or made!!! The milk makes the difference! As I have gone thru other recipes, even made them the way they’ve said to when there were other flavors involved. I keep going back to your base recipe EVERY time! Thank you for sharing, as I continue to share your post with others when they ask how I’ve made mine!
      Side note: Recently we made this with Honey Nut Cheerios and they were a hug even hit!!

        Yes, I have cut them into heart shapes before and I have also dipped them in candy melts. The hearts kept their shape. Just make sure they are fully cooled before cutting them.

      Thank you for this!! I can make fantastic layered squares that take forever to make . Harder the squares or bar is I can do it with ease…. but rice crispy squares completely undo me, I have to buy them
      at the store for the kids! LMAO Friends think it’s funny I sell my baking to customers and can’t make this square. Kids had it for afternoon snack and loved them then asked who made them.

      I’m planning on making these for vacation bible school and want to add green food coloring so the kids can shape them into trees. If I made them the day before ( like around 10 am) do you think they will still be able to mold them the next morning? Trying to figure out if I can do a make ahead or not!

        Hi! If I am making shapes, I usually make them the same day that I make the treats. If you are using cookie cutters, waiting a day may be ok.

        Hello! Wednesday may be a bit far out to make the treats. Is there any way you could make then possibly Friday night? That would be more ideal. They don’t take much time to make.

      I know you said you didn’t refrigerate. Since there is milk in the recipe, shouldn’t they be refrigerated? Just curious. I know what you mean though, they probably will firm up too much if you refrigerate.

        We don’t put ours in the refrigerator. However, if you are more comfortable, you can put them in fridge. Just a warning, they will be firm if you do. I have not had a problem with them being out but choose what you think is best in your environment.

      In my house, these treat don’t get eaten unless they have peanut butter. I just throw in a heaping spoonful along with the melted marshmallows before mixing. YUMMMMMMMMY !!!!!

        You could try them with the big ones, I just haven’t made them that way. I would get a kitchen scale out and measure out 160z of them.

      These came out perfectly!! They never dried out or got hard, they were even better the next day! I actually added 2Tblsp of milk and thought it might have been too much but was perfect! Great, easy recipe and will definitely be keeping and making again!
