Moss Stitch Crochet Dishcloth Pattern

I just love how the moss stitch looks and it is so simple to crochet!

The moss stitch is also a great stitch for beginners since it is all made with single crochet stitches and chains!

The idea of the moss stitch is that you crochet a single crochet then a chain. These two stitches alternate throughout the pattern.

The moss stitch also makes beautiful color pooling projects.

If you need a row counter, I highly suggest using Susan Bates Digital Row Counter. I love mine!

The row counter wraps around my index finger and it easy to “count” by touching it with my thumb of the same hand.

  1. Love it because it’s purple. Honestly, I won’t make it. But sure is pur-dy!
    Here from Tips and Tricks.

  2. These are SO practical and pretty!

  3. Hurray! I’ve been looking for a dish cloth pattern. I’m a bit leery of making them, as my past experience with them has been … well… moldy lol. No matter how much water I wring out of them, they seem to get a mildewy smell after one use. Suggestions? Maybe the type of yarn I used?

Thanks for sharing on This Is How We Roll Thursdays!

    1. Are you using 100% cotton? I usually grab up the Peaches and Cream yarn in Walmart. I also usually put my washcloths in the laundry bin after a day of use. I wash them with my towels in warm water. Hope that helps!

After rinsing in hot water, rinse in cold water and wring out excess water. Helps keep sour smell out.

Thanks for linking these up at the Bewitchin’ Projects Block Party! I have used these before and have to say how much I love them! They are so much better than regular store bought cloths. Now… if only I could crochet I’d be all set :) Hmmm… will just have to find someone close that can :) Thanks again for linking up and have a lovely day! Hugs, Lisa

I taught myself how to crochet by using tutorials on utube. The thing that is most confusing to me is what chain or stitch do you start next row with. I think I can follow this one tho. If this one is learned then yipee I now know 2 patterns for dish cloths. I just a beginner.

    1. I did the same thing. I taught myself by watching youtube videos. I agree, that is the most confusing thing. I am sure you can make this one, I have faith. :)

I LOVE your free dishcloth patterns….they are wonderful….thank you soooo much for sharing them….I’ve made two so far.

    1. Thank you! I am glad you are enjoying them!

  8. Been crocheting washcloths for years. I have settled into using a size F or G hook. Stitches are tighter and less floppy. Also on most I use size 3 red heart fashion crochet thread. Two strands. Also, make chain with hook two sizes larger. Avoids the curling (I tended to get). Love Love them. Try it.

    1. Where do you get the Red Heart size 3 yarn?

      1. You can get the cotton yarn from local yarn stores, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Wal-mart, and several stores online.

    Hi Devon
Great Blog,You have here, so happy I found it…wanted easy but beautiful Dish cloths to make for Christmas to give to people to just say am thinking of you without making it out to be a gift…I have had problen with cotton towel, they get a little smelly, hahaha. what I have found is Bernat one Pounder Yarn, works wonderful, and after washing the color stays the same…though it is an acrylic it has a cottony feel…I made dish drying mat for when i just do a few dishes or just wash cup. I put the dish mat next to the sink looks pretty and does its job. This Bernat yarn works like a charm. I buy it at Joanne’s Fabric cause they have the best selection of colors…it cost almost $10. but it is a lot of yarn and goes a lon way… Well hope this helps someone…Thank you so very much, am starting my dish cloths using you pattern, Thwnk again, CocoAngel

  10. Love the pattern. The purple is lovely. I make dishclothes too. I only use white cotton because I can always bleach them to become snow white again. In the colored ones that are so pretty, once they are stained by something, it seems to remain. Thanks for the pattern though, can’t wait to try it.

  11. Regarding smelly dishcloths! Once a week or whenever, microwave a damp cloth for one minute. That kills the moldy stuff and your cloth will be fresh again.

    1. Thanks for the excellent tip, Anne!!
