Free Crochet Hot Pads Pattern

I mentioned before that I made my sister’s gift for her wedding shower. Her gift included four dishcloths, a scrubbie (check out my newest scrubbie pattern!), and a pair of hot pads. It made for a great gift since it was all things that she needed.

These hot pads are double thickness to help protect your hands while you remove hot pans or dishes from the oven. They also work great to set the hot dish on to protect your table or counter.

These hot pads are made with single crochet stitches. The tight stitches make for the best coverage against the heat.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • Two colors of worsted weight cotton yarn. If you use ombre like I did, you will need two balls of the ombre to finish two hot pads. For the solid color, only one ball is needed. I used Peaches and Creme but you can use Sugar and Cream.
  • I Hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle

INSIDE PIECE DIRECTIONS (the solid color piece in my photo)

  • Row 1: Chain 27 and single crochet along the chain for a total of 26 stitches. Chain 1 and turn your work.
  • Row 2 through 26: Single crochet across. Chain 1 and turn your work. On Row 26, cut your yarn and tie it off.

OUTSIDE PIECE DIRECTIONS (the ombre color piece in my photo)

  • Row 1: Chain 27 and single crochet along the chain for a total of 26 stitches. Chain 1 and turn your work.
  • Row 2 through 26: Single crochet across. Chain 1 and turn your work. On Row 26, DO NOT CUT YOUR YARN! We will continue to use the yarn to put the two pieces of the hot pads together.

PUTTING THE 2 PIECES TOGETHER

  • Your outside piece stitches will be horizontal so you need to lay your inside piece so that the stitches will be vertical. This allows for extra protection from the heat. Lay the inside piece on top of the outside so that it is closest to you.
  • Single crochet around the outside of the pieces by going into both pieces at the same time to create one stitch. You will know if you miss a stitch as your pieces won’t match up perfectly.
  • Once you reach a corner, put three single crochet stitches in the corner to make a nice rounded corner.
  • As you go around, place any ends in between the two pieces.
  • Once your edging is complete, cut your yarn and tie off. Using a yarn needle, thread the end in between the two pieces to finish off your work. Repeat all the steps to make your second hot pad.
