If Your Dog Could Talk, What Would He Say?

In my house, we treat our pets like people, so I am curious to see what they would say if they had the ability to talk. I have a very vocal yorkie that makes a loud howl noise that sounds like “yow, yow, yow, yow” when we have guests. It’s funny because we always say that is him greeting them.

Check out this video by Dogswell that features a talking dog:

I am certain that if my dog could talk he would request treats. Dogswell is offering $1 off coupon on their Facebook page so that your pooch can try out their Jerky Bars.

The Jerkey Bars come in 4 different flavors: Chicken & Veggies, Lamb & Veggies, Salmon & Veggies and Turkey & Veggies and you can visit their website to find them in a store near you.

What’s different about Dogswell treats? They contain 85% protein, 15% fruits & veggies and 0% bad stuff.

So, if your dog could talk, what would he say?

Diagnose Your Sticky Situation with the Clorox Ick-tionary

Have you ever had a sticky situation that was tough to describe? Messes are disgusting, but as parents we combat our fair share of them and may as well have a laugh! Head on over to the Clorox Ick-tionary website to find a list of common household messes created by other parents and see what Clorox products can help combat them.

clorox_ick

The fun part about the Ick-tioinary is that you can also submit your own words! I submitted a term and definition to the website that is a common household mess that we deal with daily:

Table Scraps: The leftover food that remains stuck to the table after the kids have finished their meal.

Eww, right? But the most important thing is that we can laugh about the nasty messes later!

We use the Clorox Disinfecting Wipes after every meal to clean up the table. They are textured, so they are perfect for getting the messes that are stuck on good, and they cut through grease, so I use them to wipe off my stove and countertops. These wipes are great to keep around the kitchen, and in the bathrooms. I also use these to wipe off all of the door handles in our home regularly because they kill the cold and flu viruses. It’s so easy to just grab a wipe, and go through the house with it.

I’ve used the Clorox Disinfecting wipes for years now and just discovered that I can also clean my windows with them. For years I have tried to come up with ways to wash my windows where I didn’t have streaks. My best secret was to use crumpled newspaper along with the window cleaner to get a streak-free window. However, now I know that I can simply use a Clorox wipe.

I have a large glass door that often gets peppered with doggie nose prints. I grabbed my wipes, went outside, and cleaned off my window. To my surprise, it was streak-free! Pretty excellent in my opinion! Now I don’t have to worry about washing my hands free of the black print from the newspaper. :)

What are some of the terms that you can come up with around your house for the Clorox Ick-tionary?

My Summer Beauty Routine #JergensNaturalGlow

JergensNaturalGlowFace

My beauty regime during the summer changes quite a bit from that of the winter. I’ve learned over the past five years since I’ve lived in Nebraska that the weather is a little bit of everything. In the past two weeks alone we’ve gone from snow to 100 degrees. Last year we were in a drought, but had so much rain this year that it brought us out of it. I’ve learned to be prepared for any temperature.

I put together a little video sharing what I consider to be the most important beauty product of the summer – sunscreen. I get my daily sunscreen by using Jergens Natural Glow for the Face.

I had to wear shades because it was SO bright outside. That makes me excited though, because it is spring! (Even thought it feels like we have skipped directly over spring.) I love using the Jergens Natural Glow product for my face because it gives a great glow to my skin without the dangers of laying outside in the sun and getting potential sunburns or aged skin.

Jergens makes it easier than ever to glow with the NEW Natural Glow Moisturizers that provides great color, year-round, without the sunless tanner odor.

The Blasphemy Box by Mandy Behbehani

The-Blasphemy-Box

The-Blasphemy-Box“You know that nightmare you’ve always had? The one where you wake up one day to find yourself fat, frumpy, fifty and alone? I’m living it.”

Maddy Nelson has an idyllic existence: a handsome husband, great kids, a comfortable, affluent lifestyle. One morning soon after she turns fifty, however, she wakes up in her San Francisco home to find her husband Steven announcing that he’s leaving her for a woman half her age. And a third of her size.

Ouch!

Feeling totally unmoored and grieving for her married life and husband, Maddy finds herself thrust into an unfamiliar and uncomfortable world of middle-aged singledom. There, she must come to terms with her situation and embark on her new life: divorce proceedings, single parenting, internet dating, and trying to earn a living. It’s enough to drive her over the brink. To help her cope, she shares her struggles in a smart, wry blog named The Blasphemy Box, after her ex-husband’s obnoxious habit of having her drop a quarter into a wooden box every time she said something off color. Her madcap middle-aged adventures find her devoted readers who identify with her challenges.

In time, Maddy recreates herself and finds happiness in the arms of a good man, and a fulfilling new career as a novelist.

Review:

A fantastic read!

This book is chalk full of emotion for the main character, Maddy, as she has her world turned upside down by the very person that she trusted the most, her husband. After she finds out that he is leaving her for a woman half her age, she is forced to pick up her life and put the pieces back together.

Even though the book takes you along Maddy’s journey, you can’t help but relate to her as a character, especially if you have ever been through a breakup. The author incorporates humor that will have you laughing out loud at times, making Maddy a 3D character that you love right from the start.

The book flowed very nicely and was a very enjoyable read. I sat down and read it all in one sitting because the story pulled me in and I just had to find out what was going to happen.

I would say that the genre of this book is chic-lit, but anyone looking for a good read about relationships would love this. I highly recommend!

Review:

This is a cute book for kids. It tells all about the importance of staying on your own path, no matter what others say. The message is to do what you like to do and what makes you happy. My daughter loved looking at the illustrations and enjoyed that the character’s names were Veggie and Carb. She loves rabbits, so she enjoyed following Veggie’s story.

As an adult, this book resonated with me also. So many times we become concerned with other people’s perceptions of us that we lose focus. As long as we stay true to ourselves and the best decisions for us, that is all that should matter.

A great book with a great message!

Put A New Twist On The Way You Clean

smart-twist-kitchen-kit

How many different cleaning products do you find yourself carrying around from room to room as you clean?

I took this challenge and found myself carrying several from room to room.

smart-twist-kitchen-kitNow, how would you feel about carrying all of your cleaning products around in just one simple, handy-to-use, system? Would it make your life easier? I know that it has mine. Especially with having a child around. I have to take extra precaution to keep all of my cleaning products out of her reach and locked away safely. Having all of my cleaners together in this hand-held system really helps me get stuff done without having to worry about her trying to grab something that she shouldn’t.

The Lone Ranger – New Posters & Livestream Event #TheLoneRanger

The Lone Ranger

The Lone Ranger hits theaters on July 3rd (during my birthday month, yay!). Growing up I used to watch The Lone Ranger black and white television shows on the weekends. I’ve never been a huge fan of black and white tv, so I am super excited to see that Walt Disney Studios is remaking this movie, and (ahem) that Johnny Depp is Tonto.

Here are some enticing new posters released today of the characters.

The Lone RangerArmie Hammer as The Lone Ranger. Perfect Lone Ranger, right?

Johnny Depp as TontoJohnny Depp as Tonto. Have I mentioned already how much I love Johnny Depp?

Helena as RedNow this is VERY exciting. Helena Bonham Carter as Red.

I fell in love with Johnny and Helena starring together in Sweeney Todd, so I am super excited to see them both in this movie.

Okay, confession time. How many of you had a toy horse named Silver? I did, just so I could say Hi-Yo Silver, Away! It’s the simple things from childhood that bring back the best memories.

Happy National Poetry Month! #DeliciousPairings

Delicious Pairings

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month?

National Poetry Month was started in 1996 as a way for us to celebrate and share poetry among our culture. Nationally, libraries and schools participate in this event by holding poetry readings, setting up displays, and holding workshops for people who are interested to learn and practice the craft.

I started writing when I was young, and found poetry as a way to better express my feelings. In fact, I know many friends who were first introduced to poetry during their High School years and used it as an outlet for some of the emotional life transitions that they were going through. I have always used writing as a form of therapy. It helps me make more sense of something as I can see the words on the page. The best thing about poetry is that it doesn’t have to rhyme – it can be whatever you want it to be, because it is art.

This weekend I decided to have a marathon writing session because I am a bit behind in word count for my novel.  The one thing I always make sure to have on hand for writing is coffee and something sweet.

Delicious Pairings

The Starbucks Dark French Roast happened to be my coffee of choice for this event. I absolutely love the Starbucks line of coffee and am so glad that I can purchase the grounds from my local Walmart and brew them at home to achieve the exact same quality as I would get if I drove to Starbucks and purchased one. In fact, I actually save a lot of money in gas by doing this because I drink it so often. The Dark French Roast has a very stout flavor and is their boldest flavor. Since it is a “dark” roast, this means that they roast the beans at a temperature level that will allow them to come out with the most bold flavor, which is part of what I love about Starbuck’s brand of coffee, you know that you always get exactly what you purchase.

By itself, the coffee is divine. It is very rich and flavorful with notes of toasted nuts, caramelized sugar, and roasted vegetables. I know this sounds strange, but it is delicious. When I went shopping for the coffee I loved seeing the selection that Starbucks now has in my local Walmart. They have anything you could want from beans, to grounds, to instant. I even saw some of the instant versions of their tasty lemonades. Be sure to check out the special display at your local Walmart featuring the Starbucks brand of coffee!

I wanted to pick up a snack to pair with my coffee during my writing marathon. The Walmart Bakery offers an array of tasty treats that allow you to have a snack, for an affordable price, without having to go to the trouble of slaving away in the kitchen all afternoon. (Which I definitely didn’t have time for since it would have defeated the goal for my weekend of only writing.)

Brownies

I came home with the Turtle brownies. I am a sucker for chocolate and caramel together. Pairing the dark chocolate brownie with the dark roasted coffee was heaven. The perfect amount of sweet to bitter ratio and they complimented each other so well. In order to adequately pair chocolate and coffee, it is advised that the chocolate is at room temperature and that the coffee is freshly brewed. When drinking the coffee by itself, I noticed the rich aroma and the strong bite of the brew. I personally love this in my coffee. I tend to have more of a bitter palate than a sweet one. Next, I took a square of the turtle brownie and ate it slowly, allowing the flavors to explode in my mouth. If you have never tried pairing coffee with chocolate before, I highly recommend it. It is honestly one of the best things your taste buds will ever experience.

Turtle Brownie

It wouldn’t be Natoinal Poetry Month without celebrating by writing a poem, so since we are on the subject of coffee today, I decided to share a little something about one of my best friends, my morning coffee.

Ode To Coffee

My morning coffee, though a treat
Is anything but nice and sweet
I like caffeine to do it’s job
As I’m a bit of a coffee snob.

2 Tablespoons to brew my cup
The only thing that wakes me up
I crave the rich aroma too
But not just any cup will do.

My day begins at 8am
With a dark and roasted, faithful friend
I prefer to start my day
The loyal, good old-fashioned way.

My addiction may be obsure
But I swear to you, it’s good and pure
No, I don’t NEED coffee to survive
But it sure helps keep my brain alive.

Thanks for stopping by and Happy National Poetry Month!

Showing More Skin This Spring #JergensNaturalGlow

Spring-Outfits

Okay friends, I’ll admit now that I am a tshirt and jeans type of girl. I cannot tell you the last time that I wore a dress and I have issues with wearing tops that have a short sleeve because I hate the looks of my arms.

Mostly because my skin is so bright in the Spring that it sparkles.

Like, Edward in the sun sparkles (for all of you Twilight fans).

This year I have been applying Jergens Natural Glow products to my skin and am starting to feel a little bit better about showing my arms and legs in public. In fact, I actually purchased a dress! (I know, it’s a big step).

I had fun shopping for some new clothes and felt better about purchasing them because my skin actually compliments them. Orange is one of my favorite colors, but I never wear it because I end up looking so pale! Now, the orange compliments my skin nicely.

I also picked up several camisole tops during my shopping trip and this cute top that has short sleeves. These outfits will look great for spring.

Here are a few of the items I picked up on my last shop.

I’m excited to show you all my entire look put together in my post next month. I will combine my glowing skin (courtesy of only Jergens products), my spring outfits, and my beauty routine, and I might even sneak in a few photos of myself. :)

When you wear that perfect outfit, you look and feel radiant. With that in mind, Jergens Skincare has partnered with celebrated stylist Kate Young to create Pinterest boards of image inspiration.

Describe your style below for a chance to win $250 from Jergens to update your wardrobe!

It’s Easy to Share Your Purchases Visually with Finds

Finds

Ever have a friend share a photo of cute new shoes with you via social media and wonder where she got them so that you can go snatch up a pair for yourself? Yeah, me too.

Well, now there is a way.

Finds

Finds is a new app that you can download on your iPhone that makes it easy to upload photos of your recent finds and share them with your friends. The best part? They scour the internet and attach a link to purchase the product if they can find one. This is awesome and I can see that it will be very useful.

I made sure my phone was upgraded to iOS6 and then downloaded the Finds app to my iPhone. Joining was simple, I just logged in with my Facebook account. It pulled over my profile photo and basic information so I didn’t have to enter anything before I could get started.

There are a few different things you can do with this app – browse finds by friends, browse all finds, add your recent purchases, and wish list items that you find that you want

Finds-Collage

I uploaded a few of the new shoes that I got at Maurices. After you upload your find, you enter the store and the product name (if you know it), a small description, and you can share it with your friends no Facebook or Twitter. I also updated my wish list and found some awesome new items that I would love to have that fellow Finds users have posted.

What I love most about this app is the fact that it has an amazing design and is very visually appealing. It is also extremely simple to use. I know that I will be using this to expand my shoe collection AND search for great new beauty products.

The best part about using Finds is that as long as you have at least 3 followers and post once a week, you are automatically entered to win a $100 Visa Debit Card! What an awesome incentive to give this free app a shot!

What feature do you think you will like best about Finds?

5 Tips To Maintain a Healthy Household

Washing Hands

Staying healthy is a priority at my house. Since I own my own business working from home, and have a toddler to watch full-time, I don’t get sick days where I can lay in bed and nurse myself back to health. I often spend enough time taking care of my family when they are ill, which is equally not fun.

Washing Hands

I’ve compiled a short list of tips I use to maintain a healthy household below.

Practice hand washing with kids.

We decided to get my daughter her own soap dispenser and have a stool next to the sink so that she can wash her hands. We practice hand washing before and after we eat, after we use the restroom, and after we come in from outside. This process is so natural to my three-year old that we almost don’t even have to remind her now. I say almost, because we all know how forgetful kids can be at times. :)

Wipe down door knobs

We have made a huge difference in eliminating the germs in our home simply by wiping down the door handles often. Especially the knobs to the bathrooms and the bedrooms. The Lysol Disinfecting Wipes make this process so easy. I just pull them out of the container, wipe, and toss.

Avoid close contact with others.

I like hugs, but not if you have a bug. We try to practice avoiding close contact with those that we know are ill and make sure to wipe down surfaces before we touch them (especially grocery store carts).

Disinfect surfaces.

Did you know that there is a difference between cleaning and disinfecting? Both are very important parts of the Lysol Healthing Initiative and to maintain a healthy household. Cleaning will remove the dirt and germs, but disinfecting surfaces can further remove the bacteria and prevent germs from transferring to other family members.

Maintain a balanced diet make sure you get enough exercise.

By getting up and moving with your family you can keep healthy! I have been exercising a lot lately and have missed the bug the past few times that my husband has gotten sick. My immune system is stronger and I feel better overall. Usually if I do fall ill, I bounce back much quicker if I am taking care of myself by eating the right foods and moving my body.

What tips do you practice to maintain a healthy household?

Lysol has partnered with Giuliana Rancic to educate YMCA’s across America about implementing healthy practices in their home. Lysol will be providing the disinfecting products and giving one family a one-year membership! To learn more about the healthing initiative, please visit their Facebook Page.

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for LYSOL®. I received a promotional item to thank me for participating.

The Divine Tempest (A Scholar’s Journey) by Herrick C. Erickson-Brigl

The Divine Tempest

The Divine TempestA Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest

A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest is a no-holds-barred fantasy brawl. It begins when the God of Justice and Retribution opens The Abyss and unleashes a vengeful demon upon the mortal realm of Therra.

Now it is up to scholar Penndarius Greyson and his tormented protector, martial artist Soren Luna Mortalitas, to stop a crisis that would send shockwaves through the very fabric of creation. In addition, Penndarius is waging an internal battle with a disembodied presence attempting to possess his mind. The two heroes must avoid death or capture, but there is a catch: They have only one day to solve a riddle older than history before a dark host of unstoppable demons is released into the world.

The Divine Tempest includes warring factions, betrayal and redemption, and of course, Herrick Erickson-Brigl’s trademark: epic fight scenes. This is the lean, hard-hitting first installment in a series that follows Penndarius’s growth as the avatar of the God of Creation and Soren’s reclamation of his lethal family’s humanity.

Review of A Scholar’s Journey: The Divine Tempest

What a great fantasy book! The author has done an amazing job of building up the world that everything takes place in throughout The Divine TEmpest and the book flows very easily – I was able to sit down and devour it all at once.

The characters in this book were very unique. They went through both external and internal struggles, which I felt made the story. My favorite characters were definitely the twins, they were firey and really made the story. The entire book took place within one single day, but Herrick definitely packed a punch in that day and told a fantastic story.

Like many fantasy books, we are along the ride with the characters searching for the truth. The battle scenes were well written and had me on the edge of my seat. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait for his next one to come out. The author is a fantastic new face to the fantasy genre!

Despite Mickey’s proclamation that he will never play baseball again after last season’s violent conclusion, his manager—and now surrogate father—Arthur Murphy cajoles the emotionally fragile, socially awkward boy with autism into giving it another shot. Mickey reluctantly returns to the field and must once again cope with the violence and hatred around him. When a young African American player joins the team, the entire team is subjected to racial threats and episodes of violence, one of which Mickey witnesses firsthand. Struggling to understand such ugliness and hatred, and fearful of reprisal should he tell anyone about what he has seen, the boy’s performance on the field suffers. Mickey now must deal with a side of human nature he scarcely comprehends.

The Legend of Mickey Tussler Review

I am an avid baseball fan, so when I first heard about this book, I knew that I had to read it. Frank Nappi does a wonderful job of painting the visual picture of the era that this story took place in. Mickey Tussler is a 17 year old autistic boy who comes with his own set of family struggles. I would have loved to see Mickey out on the mound pitching fastballs because to me, the pitcher is one of the most exciting parts of the game. But, you don’t have to be a fan of baseball to enjoy this book, because the underlying messages actually has little to do with the game.

At times, my heart wrenched for Mickey. as so many of the people in his life didn’t appreciate him. Frank Nappi does a phenomenal job of making me feel like I was inside the story and knew the characters well. This story is just as much about the behavior that humans exhibit during different scenarios as it was about baseball. Once I started reading, I could not put this book down and I am very excited to read the second one next.

I feel like Nappi knows a great deal about baseball and really enjoyed his narrative skills during the games. After all, it is baseball season right now and I have been catching every game I can on the radio, because that is how I grew up listening to them with my Grandfather. This story became special to me because I felt I had a personal connection to it. I can’t wait to see what happens in Book 2! I highly recommend any novels that Frank Nappi write. He is a wonderful writer and can really tell a great story.

Spring is Coming… Eventually. It’s Time To Visit The Garden Club

Flower

I know it seems like Spring keeps peeking it’s head out and running back in to hide lately here in the Midwest, but eventually, it will be here to stay. I am chomping at the bit to start working on some new home DIY projects. Last year I planted a few flowers and added a bird feeder to our backyard, but this year I am planning to turn my focus on making our yard visually appealing. The drought we suffered from in Nebraska last year really did a number on our yard.

Flower

I hope that you all will join me on my Spring DIY journey with The Home Depot! I’ve been checking out all of the great projects on The Home Depot Garden Club website. This is a fantastic community that offers great benefits for members.

What am I most excited about? The ability to have access to experts who know about the weather conditions in my local area and can help guide me accordingly. The first few years that I lived in Nebraska I failed miserably when it came to planting flowers. It is very windy here, and therefore also very dry. Anything I planted either got blown away, or died if I missed watering it for a few days.

We also don’t have much in our backyard. I mentioned that we added a bird feeder last year, but that is it. We purchased a new home in 2008 and ended up with a bare canvas for a yard. We haven’t done any landscaping even. This is the year for outdoor projects, and the Garden Club is going to be an amazing asset to have access to. I can’t wait to get started!

When you sign up for The Home Depot Garden Club, you will receive some great discounts. Members get over $300 worth of exclusive savings and an inside look at all of the new and exciting projects. You also will get access to how-to videos, spring project ideas, and $5 off of your next garden purchase worth $50 or more.

It’s home improvement time, and The Home Depot has everything you need for spring. No matter what projects you want to tackle, The Home Depot has you covered and can help you #DigIn to Spring.

Spring is the perfect time for all your outdoor home renovations. Shop The Home Depot for terrific values on new patio furniture, landscape supplies such as fertilizer and potting soil and outdoor grills. Keep your lawn and garden looking great, too, with the huge selection of lawn mowers, edgers and trimmers, and garden tools.

Sunless Tanning Solutions: How I Maintain a Natural Glow

Jergens

I was just complaining of how pale and pasty my skin looked a few weeks back and one of my friends from the East Coast tells me, “Well of course, you are from the Midwest.” Sadly, the truth is that during the spring our weather is so sporadic that it’s hard to get much sunshine.

I personally lather up in sunscreen when I go outdoors these days. My skin burns very easily. But, one of the things I’ve always done is to use a self-tanner to get a natural glow.

I’ve tried many brands, some with much better results than others. The only one that I have used and trust to give me a natural glow gradually is Jergens.

I once used a sunless tanner and ended up with orange streaks down the fronts of my legs. I spent several days trying home remedies to remove them. My legs were raw and my patience was thin, but my husband seemed to get a nice kick out of it. :)

Now, Jergens is my go to brand for products to give me a natural glow. I will be using the products shown below for the next three months to give my skin a little bit of color before I get outdoors this summer. One thing that excites me is that these products contain sunscreen, so they are also protecting my skin while they work!

NEW Jergens® Natural Glow Moisturizer provides the same great, natural-looking color but without the sunless tanner odor!

Share your embarrassing tanning story for your chance to win a $250 Visa gift card.

Shepherd’s Pie: Velveeta Cheesy Casseroles Dinner Kit

ShepardsPie

Shepherd’s Pie is one of my favorite casserole dishes. I love the combination of the ground beef with the mashed potatoes on top. It’s the best comfort food. Ever.

ShepherdsPie

Velveeta has just come out with Cheesy Casserole Dinner Kits that provide us ingredients to make some of our favorites the quick and easy way. I am all about quick and easy. This entire meal only took about 40 minutes from start to finish.

Velveeta

In the box, you get potato flakes for the mashed potatoes, seasoning mix, vegetables (carrots and peas), and the Velveeta cheese. With just a few additional ingredients, and a very easy assembly process, the Shepherd’s Pie was made and ready to eat. I added ground beef, a can of corn, and used some milk and butter in the preparation process.

Cooking

Once the beef mixture is made, you layer it in a 8×8 casserole dish.

Shepherd's Pie Hamburger

While I was doing this, I was also making the mashed potatoes in the microwave. I layered the hamburger mixture, the Velveeta cheese, and spread the mashed potatoes evenly on top.

ShepherdsPie

This dinner kit makes approximately 4 1/2 servings, which is perfect for our family of 3. It ensures we usually have a little bit left over for lunch the next day.

Now that I’ve had this dinner kit, I can’t wait to try out the other two!

What are some of your favorite easy meals to prepare for dinner?

20 Minutes or Less: Taco Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

Taco Mac and Cheese

Sometimes as moms we have limited time to cook meals, and I am all about things that can be made quick and easy. Today, I want to share a recipe that I’ve been making for a while now to “dress up” a regular boxed macaroni and cheese! It is very simple and definitely fits in the 20 minutes or less category.

Taco Mac and Cheese

This recipe is quick, delicious, and can be made to fit any person’s tastes. If you like tacos, and macaroni and cheese, you are sure to love them combined!

Taco Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

Total time

Author:
Serves: 2-4

Ingredients
  • i Box Kraft Macaroni and Cheese (Blue Box)
  • ½ Cup Milk
  • 2 Tbsp Butter
  • ½ Pound Hamburger
  • ½ Packet of Taco Seasoning
  • ⅓ Cup Water
  • Tortilla Chips
  • Shredded Taco Cheese
  • Chives

Instructions
  1. Brown ½ pound of hamburger and drain.
  2. Add taco seasoning and approximately ⅓ cup water and stir.
  3. Prepare Kraft Macaroni and Cheese by the instructions on the box. After noodles are drained, add milk, butter, and cheese. You will notice in the recipe that I use half the amount of butter they call for in the standard macaroni and cheese recipe. This is just for personal taste.
  4. Combine the macaroni and cheese and hamburger mixture and stir.
  5. Place in bowl and top with shredded cheese, chives, and tortilla chips.

Notes
You can also add onions, lettuce, tomato, or salsa to this mixture as you like. Turn it into a dip by adding some taco sauce and serving with sour cream or guacamole.

Evil on the Peace River by Beverly Lein

Evil on the Peace RiverEvil on the Peace River

There’s no name for the kind of evil that’s taken a foothold in the hills…

The calmness of the community is reflected in its name. Peace River is the kind of small town you read about: where everyone knows your name; where neighbours look out for each other; and where the toughest kind of criminal you’re likely to come across is a lone horse thief.

But a cold wind has blown into the Peace—as the locals call it—one that takes the form of two psychopaths whose consciences are guided only by their own twisted desires. Bent on wreaking as much carnage as possible while they line their pockets, two brothers terrorize the normally quiet Northern Alberta community.

Their deadly rampage gathers steam and cutting a bloody swath across the hills. It’s a deadly game of ‘hunt to kill’, as police struggle to stem the tide of bodies the brothers leave in their wake.

About Author T.S. Graham

T.S. Graham was born and raised in midcoast Maine. He has worked as a sea urchin diver, fish monger, home renovator, and in several group homes for children and adults with disabilities. His original screenplay, Stone’s Point, written as Clint Elliott, has won multiple awards. He studied English Literature at the University of Southern Maine, where, despite developing a strong dislike of the traditional curriculum focused on old, dead (and boring) scribes, he somehow managed to graduate with honors. His greatest influences are writers like Stephen King and Michael Crichton, whose talents would have allowed them to write more literary fare, but they chose to thrill and entertain instead. He now lives on a horse farm with his beautiful wife and five daughters, two poodles, two cats, two happy turtles, four playful ferrets, three fish, a corn snake named “Tiger,” dozens of chickens, and, of course, four awesome equines. The Chronicles of Trellah, Book One: The Perpetual Rain is his debut novel.

Review:

This book was fantastic and I finished it very quickly. It is a young-adult fantasy that is suitable for adults who love fantasy as well. The story line pulled me in quickly as I read about Sophina and her journey. This character was very strong despite everything that has occurred in her life.

T.S. Graham did an amazing job building this fantasy world. I felt like I was there. The town was mystical and I enjoyed meeting several of the creatures within it.

I’m very excited that there is going to be more books in this series because I want more! Highly recommend!

Pull Your Chair Up To The Table

Kraft

Growing up, my mom had one meal time rule – we always ate at the table.

This rule stayed constant throughout the entire time I lived at home. Even when I had friends over, we all gathered around the dinner table and ate our meal. Looking back, I now see why this was so important, because often dinnertime is the only time when you get to sit and talk as a family.

table

When I moved out and into my own home, I found myself straying from this rule. After all, if you are a single person living alone, there isn’t really anyone to talk to on the other side of the table. But once I had a family, and our daughter began sitting in her high chair to eat solid foods, we started the tradition of always eating at the table with her.

Now, my dining room table is approximately 15 years old. I received it as a present from my parents when I moved into my first apartment at college. Since then, it has been splattered with paint when I painted my kitchen wall, scorched as I learned about cooking and what not to place on the table, and colored on with markers since my daughter has started learning more about art. Even though the table might be scarred, it is still the same table that we gather around every night to share a meal and good conversation as a family.

Do you have any meal time traditions?

Technology To Make Our Shopping Easier – Video

I love technology, so when I saw this video of The Future of Frozen Foods I was intrigued. I’ve seen a few posts around the web lately about this new technology from Google and can’t help but wonder how it is going to impact our shopping in the future. Part of me thinks, wow, it would be really handy to be able to search information about food while I was standing in front of it (especially since I have been working very hard this past year to lose weight).

I invite you to watch the video and let me know what you think!

Now that you have seen the video, what do you think?

Personally, I love the part where you can ask about the nutritional value of a food and receive it immediatley. I spend so much time in the store staring at labels, not having any clue what most of it means. I also was blown away with the map of the frozen aisle! That would really come in handy when you are looking for items around the store.

I know a lot of people could be concerned about us being “connected” at all times. Sometimes when I go to the store, it is nice to have that time to myself and not have to talk to anyone. But, the way I look at it is that I still wouldn’t have to talk to anyone I didn’t want to and only use the technology that I needed at that time.

What do you all think?

Enjoying Movie Night With My Family

PopSecretLogo

We try to have movie night as a family at least once a month. Since our daughter is still young, we allow her to pick out an age appropriate movie to watch first, and then after she goes to bed my husband and I will stay up and watch another. I prefer comedies and my husband prefers action movies, so we usually try to find a happy medium.

Movie-Night

We believe that watching movies together as a family builds our relationship and allows us uninterrupted time to spend together. During movie night, we turn off all of our electronics and just spend time with each other. It is nice to spend an evening unplugged from the online world and enjoying good conversation.

On movie nights, we usually grab pizza for dinner and then will pop popcorn to enjoy during the movie. We love adding toppings to our popcorn, which is sort of a tradition in itself. When I was growing up, my grandmother would use the stove to pop popcorn and allow us to choose our own toppings. My favorite? Parmesan cheese. I know that sounds crazy, but still to this day I enjoy parmesan cheese on my popcorn. My husband prefers garlic salt on his, and my daughter likes hers plain. Occasionally, I will also mix some chocolate candy pieces in with our popcorn, if I am feeling like a little something sweet.

Popcorn

When I make popcorn, I always separate it out into multiple bowls. I grew up with two brothers who always had their hands in my popcorn bowl, and as much as my mother tried to teach me how to share, I just don’t like people touching my popcorn. haha! So I usually make a bowl for each of us.

How do you like your popcorn?

PopSecretLogo

At Pop Secret, we love movies as much as you love movies. So we’re on a mission to make movie watching and popcorn even more social and fun. We’re sharing a bunch of apps, tools, and fun partnerships with everyone over at our hub, Pop Secret Labs.  Keep checking back to try ‘em all out and give us feedback. The more you get involved, the better all of our movie experiences will be. See you there!

When I Grow Up, I Want To Be a Writer

Writer

What’s my dream job? To be a writer.

Writer

You are probably thinking, but isn’t that what you do?

Yep.

Growing up I’ve had many career aspirations. At first, I wanted to become an accountant. That idea quickly went down the tubes because I hate math. I loved business though, which is why I went on to get a degree in Business Management and Marketing in college. As I look back though, throughout school my favorite classes were always in the English department.

Growing up I remember reading all the time. I was a book series addict. When I got a little older, I started journaling and writing poetry, and eventually wrote my first short story in high school. It was a mystery and I had to draw pictures along with it. My illustrations were horrible. I can’t draw a stick person to save my soul.

I stumbled upon blogging by chance. I had been working as a freelance copywriter online for businesses and thought, hey, I may as well start writing for myself. I also happen to love telling stories, so I started writing books. I am finally working in the career of my dreams, and I absolutely love it!

I am sure that as my skills evolve I will eventually achieve my ultimate goal of being able to sit on the beach, sip wine, and write books. Everyone has to start somewhere.

If you could do any job in the world, what would your dream job be?

Barbie in the Pink Shoes – A Ballerina Movie

Barbie in the Pink Shoes

Have you seen Barbie in the Pink Shoes yet? It is a magical story about a ballerina with big dreams. This story features Barbie, as Kristyn Farraday, and introduces young girls to the music and dancing of the famous Giselle and Swan Lake. The lesson for young girls is to follow your heart and your dreams.

Barbie in the Pink Shoes

Barbie in the Pink Shoes just released on February 25, 2013 and is available through the Mattel Shop for $19.99. It is available in a DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack for $29.99, marking the first time that a Barbie movie is released on Blu-Ray!

The dolls that accompany the DVD are amazing. We had the opportunity to review the Kristyn Farraday doll, which transforms outfits!

Barbie as Kristyn Farraday

This Barbie doll captures the magical transformation that Kristyn Farraday goes through in the movie by putting on the sparkling pink shoes. The doll is for ages 3+ and retails for $19.99 in the Mattel Shop.

There are also additional character dolls available for this movie, including the Prince, Giselle, and Odette.

My daughter loves the Barbie movies and playing with the dolls. I had a bit of a Barbie addiction growing up and still collect the dolls today. I hope that my daughter will play with her dolls and love them as much as I love mine.

Happiness is… The Beach

The Beach

In February, I had the chance to go to the beach. Since I live in the Midwest, the opportunity to get away from the cold weather and feel some sand between my toes was welcomed! It was a wonderful to escape for a few days and be able to enjoy some Florida sunshine.

The Beach

Visiting the beach wasn’t the only thing that I did on my trip to Florida. I was there for the Olde City, New Blood Conference for readers and writers of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance books. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet friends that I have been talking to for years online, in real life.

I’m always asked if I think people are the same online as they are meeting them in real life for the first time. Absolutely! And now that I’ve met them, I can totally put their voices with their words online.

In addition to meeting some great friends, I was also able to take several days to relax. My schedule is normally so hectic and I constantly feel like everyone is so busy around me at home. It was nice to get the opportunity to slow down and just enjoy. Being in a different atmosphere is sometimes just the rejuvenation I need.

“The most important thing is to enjoy your life—to be happy—it’s all that matters.” ― Audrey Hepburn

While being at the beach makes me happy, it was also nice to get back home to the snuggly hugs of my daughter. Next time I’ll have to take my family to the beach with me.

What are some of the things that make you happy?

Romance Novels, Hot Wings, and Domain Hoarding?

amanda long

amanda longWhat do romance novels, hot wings, and domain hoarding have to do with anything?

Today I am giving you 5 random facts about myself, and that was the most interesting title I could come up with. I am participating in a monthly blog challenge hosted by my friend Tiffany over at Fabulous Finds by Tiffany. She really is fabulous, you should go check her out.

Now to the subject at hand — 5 random facts about myself.

1. Romance Novels are my crack. I probably read, at minimum, two per week. I don’t always love a happily ever after though. I like characters to be flawed and for the situations to emulate real life. Romance is such a broad category that I feel like I should break down the books I am most interested in. I love contemporary romances and anything in the new adult category. Basically, I like reading about more adult situations, but I won’t shy away from a great young adult novel either, as long as it is written good. I am also a huge fan of paranormal romance. When I tell people this, I get strange looks and asked if this is like “ghosts getting it on.” Um, not exactly. Paranormal romance is the category where Twilight would reside. Anything to do with your vampires, werewolves, and the like. Not that you asked, but I’m a vampire girl myself. #TeamColdblood

2. Since i can’t stop talking about romance novels, my random factoid numero dos is going to be me telling you that I am writing one.

Yes, me, the person with the horrible grammar and run-on sentences is currently in process of writing two novels. Thank goodness for editors! Writing a book is something that I have wanted to do since I was a week lad and I decided to take the plunge. Currently I have a paranormal romance and a contemporary romance both in the works. I’m planning on releasing one in the fall and hopefully the next in the winter. I plan on creating a series out of both books and am very excited to see where this new journey takes me.

3.  Hot Wings should be a food group. I could eat hot wings for every meal and be perfectly content. But here is the kicker, I don’t like any other form of chicken. I haven’t always felt a hatred toward chicken, just in the past ten years or so. I think I must have eaten too much of it growing up or something.

4. I love to golf, but I’m forced to work. Golfing has been a hobby of mine for about 15 years. There is nothing more gratifying than teeing up the ball and wacking it as hard as you can with a titanium stick. haha! It is a fantastic stress release for me and allows me to enjoy the outdoors.

5. I am a domain hoarder. Some girls collect shoes, some handbags, and me? Domain names. I always tell my friends that I have more sites than sense. My brain runs constantly, so if I see one I think I may be able to use in the future, I buy it. Not unreasonable, right? Come on. . . I want to be able to justify this to my husband. :)

I hoped you have enjoyed getting to know a little bit more about me! Stay tuned for tomorrow’s topic, my favorite quotes. (Which I’m very excited about since I’m a book nut!)

Interview with Deanne Wilsted – Untangling The Knot

Untangling The Knot

Untangling The KnotUntangling The Knot

“I did what?”

Twenty-eight year old Gabriella Bessu is St. Therese’s meticulous wedding ceremony coordinator. So the fact that she has mistakenly signed her newest couple up for an annulment, rather than a wedding, sends her Catholic guilt into overdrive.

But who can blame her? The groom is gorgeous and his two kids tug at Gabriella’s heart in a way that overcomes all her best intentions. Before long she’s in over her head, fixing her mixed-up plans and helping the children and dad come to terms with their haunting grief for the mother and wife they lost years earlier.

Can Gabriella untangle her own fears and accept the messy life that God has handed them?

Her second Novel, UNTANGLING THE KNOT, is due out in February 2013 from Soul Mate Publishing. Interview with Deanne Wilsted

I want to sincerely thank Author Deanne Wilsted for taking her time to do an interview with me! I hope that you enjoy her answers as much as I have.

Tell us a little bit about your book and have you published before?

Hi Amanda. Thank you so much for inviting me to be on your blog; which, by the way, is right up my alley and a new favorite!

UNTANGLING THE KNOT is my second published novel. Like my first book, BETTING JESSICA, which I self-published in October 2011, it has a lot of humor and is a sweet romance. Unlike BETTING JESSICA, though, it deals with some heavier topics such as parenting, death and God.

In the book, Gabriella, a conscientious and careful wedding ceremony coordinator for a church, finds herself falling for the groom-to-be, Ryan, and his two children.

It’s like a cross between The Parent Trap and The Wedding Planner movies. The kids play a starring role, especially the eldest, Chloe, who because of the wedding is thrust into having to reconcile her feelings about God and death. Meanwhile Gabriella ends up making hilarious mistakes while as she subconsciously sabotages the ceremony plans. Ryan is confused by his growing feelings for Gabriella and his commitment to his engagement. All of it is a perfect set-up for a great romance.

Will this be the only book in the series?

Yes, this is a stand-alone novel. I have, however, written a free short story about Ryan’s proposal to Mandy, the fiancé.

What inspired you to become an author?

I still laugh when I think about the answer to this question. In third grade I wrote a very eight year old type poem about the sky. It won an honorable mention in my county fair. The pride I felt stayed with me over many years, so that even after an undergraduate and graduate degree in business, and many years working in banking, I was still convinced I would one day become an author. I have to thank my husband, Jeff, for pushing me to take the time off from work to actually write. It took ten years, more or less, to finish my first novel. Fortunately the process on the others has been much easier.

Do you have a routine when you write? Can you tell us about it?

Yes! And don’t try to mess with it. <grin>  Seriously, though, it’s turned out to be quite an expensive routine.

It started when we had just moved from England to Boston. We were living in a tiny, freezing cold apartment in the suburbs, with a neighbor below us who hated any kind of noise. The only way I could get work done was to go to Starbucks.

Since then, on almost any day, you can find me doing my most creative work at my local Starbucks. In fact, when we moved to Portland my main criteria for our house was that it needed to be near a Starbucks. The only time I have trouble working there is when my PMS aligns with writing a sad scene. This happened once when I was writing UNTANGLING THE KNOT, during the part where Ryan gets a message from his late wife. As I wrote I found myself sobbing in the middle of Starbucks. It was terribly embarrassing. People kept coming over and asking if I was okay. But I had to finish the scene so I just kept writing. I am much more careful now during that time of the month.

What is the most satisfying aspect of being an author?

I absolutely love the creative process. After I have written a scene that I didn’t even know existed in my imagination I feel like I have been given the most amazing gift.

That said, although the creative process is fun, the editing process is really rewarding. I especially enjoyed working with my editor at Soul Mate Publishing, Debby Gilbert, on this book. The collaborative process brought such energy to my writing and made me feel like I was sharing the journey in a special way.

Finally, it is wonderful to be applying my marketing and business background again. So, I guess you could say I love every aspect of being a writer.

What are some of your hobbies outside of writing?

Well, it isn’t really a hobby, per se, but I have an eight year old daughter who I spend a lot of time caring for and having fun with. I love to read, though I find this very difficult to do when I am in the middle of a writing project. And I love to cook, especially Italian food.

Probably, though, my biggest hobby would be travelling, mostly by armchair and web-surfing, but sometimes live. My husband and I are constantly talking about where we want to go next and how we will get there.

Next trip on my horizon, you wonder? Italy, definitely; New Orleans; England to visit friends and research a new novel I am working on; and, for my daughter, someday Egypt.

What are you working on next?

Oh my gosh… the third book I wrote, MOLTO MAYHEM, is so much fun. It is set in Italy, has a very comical cast of characters, and needs a complete revision of the plot. Sigh. I compare this to a doctor replacing the bones in the body of a beautiful model without affecting her outward appearance; very tricky!

Aside from that, I have three other novels which I have begun then put aside for one reason or another. Once I have revised Molto Mayhem, I need to get back into at least one of these and finish it. I am pretty sure I know which one it will be too. I hinted at it above. It is the one set in England and tells the story of a trip taken by a mother and daughter… with a little love thrown in, of course. My author tagline sort of says it all I think: Journeys Inspired by Love.

Thank you so much for having me. I hope you and your readers enjoy my journey!

Thanks Deanne for being such a great sport with my interview questions! I cannot wait to see what you have in store for your readers next. For more tour stops along this tour, please visit Promotional Book Tours for the entire lineup!

Bridging The Gap Between Education and Careers #LetsGetToWork

Mom

When I graduated college back in 2001, I remember feeling such a sense of accomplishment. I had obtained my Business Management and Marketing degree and now I was on the quest to find the perfect job. After looking for a job for months, I soon came to realize that settling into my career was going to be a bit harder than I first expected. I used the Internet to search for open positions daily, but I was still not coming across anything that fit.

I know many college graduates who feel this way. Unless you’ve done an internship or have a lot of work experience in that field, it is hard to get hired. When you first graduate college you feel so accomplished and excited, and only getting rejection letters is a bit disappointing. Many colleges have a career services department, but I felt a bit detached from it since I lived off campus.

University of Phoenix is bridging the gap between education and careers by providing students with the tools they need to find their optimal career path, research the job market, and find the best way to fund their education. I have been a fan of University of Phoenix for years, watching them lead the market in offering education in a convenient, innovative way.

I had the opportunity to see some of these tools firsthand and must say that I was impressed. When a prospective student views the website, one of the first things that they inquire about is how much their education will cost. University of Phoenix offers an amazing, self-service Financial Plan that can help students estimate the cost of their education and encourages them to be more responsible when choosing their funding for school.

Mom

Once enrolled in classes, students can access a tool called My Career Plan. A unique feature of this tool is that it shows you your strengths and areas to improve based on assessments that you fill out and gives you tasks to help improve in areas employers find important I really like the

way that these tasks are treated because you can set up dates to work on them and can track your progress.

University of Phoenix also offers complimentary tools to anyone who visits its website. The first is a Career Interest Profiler where visitors rank different areas of interest and receive a list of
career types that best fit those interests. Another is an amazing Job Market Research tool that is unlike any I’ve ever seen. Individuals can use this to get information about the job market in their area and to create career path profiles so that they can see which skills are needed for the jobs they are most interested in. It also allows the student to search jobs by location, employer,
and degree.

Be sure to check out the University of Phoenix’s Career Services Department online here: http://www.phoenix.edu/career-services

I have always been a strong advocate for higher education. Even now that I work from home, I am able to run my own business because of the education that I’ve received. I feel it is important to keep my skills fresh since I work with technology and social media. In my career, things are constantly changing and I feel that further education helps me adapt so that I will be able to continue to grow my business.

What about you? Did you feel yourself stuck in the gap between education and your career?

Raising Children with Pets in the Home

Bandana

By the time we had our first child, we already had two fur-babies at home. One of our dogs has been with me since my college years and is nearing 14 years of age and our yorkie is now 5 years old. These dogs are spoiled. They are used to getting a lot of attention, love, and lap-time since they are both little dogs.

Bandana

Raising pets and raising children have many similarities. Puppies require a lot of attention and training. I think that by raising pets first, we learned a lot about responsibility and caring for another living thing. When the dogs were puppies, we would have to guess their needs, much like that of a child. It is cute now to watch the transition of how our daughter, now 3 years old, acts like a little mother to our dogs.

She helps us feed and give them water daily and even assists in letting them outside to use the bathroom. We allow her to give them their treats when they are good or perform tricks for her, such as sitting down or rolling over.

Dog

Another thing that she is learning about our pets is in regards to health. We don’t feed our animals from the table because it tends to make them sick. They live on a diet of dog food and what we feed to them is just as important to me as what we put into our bodies. I have drastically changed my eating habits this year to includes many more fruits and vegetables, along with quality proteins and carbohydrates. I have started using food as a means to fuel my body instead of simply “grabbing something to eat” because I am bored. Nutrition is very important to me and my actions don’t just stop at my human baby, they apply to my fur-babies as well.

Yorkie

Parallel to health, exercise is also just as important to pets as it is children. We go on walks with our pets and play with them a lot in our back yard. We like to get out the tennis balls and the
frisbees and our daughter and dogs have a really fun time playing together.

How do you keep your pet(s) happy and healthy?

Valentine’s Crafts: Candy Cones

Candy Cone

I enjoy creating Valentine’s crafts that I can share with others. Today, I am featuring the use of a unique tool by Martha Stewart Crafts that has quickly become a staple in my supplies, the circle edge punch. I used it to create these Valentine’s Candy Cones.

Candy Cone
These cones are a great way to share candy with your Valentine! Who doesn’t love a little chocolate? Even though I filled these with chocolates, you can also fill them with toys, hand-written notes, and more! It is fun to make Valentine’s crafts with my daughter. She helped me add the candy to the insides (and stole a couple pieces, too!)

Valentine’s Candy Cones Supplies:

  • Martha Stewart Crafts Circle Edge Punch
  • Pink Paper
  • White Paper
  • Adhesive Dots
  • Ribbon
  • Scissors
  • Candy

Instructions:

Determine the size of circle you want to make. I used a 6″ circle and set the punch to that. Cut a square piece of pink paper to be about 7″x7″ square.

Punch

This tool is one of the coolest concepts I’ve ever seen. You place your full sheet of paper under the magnetic circle. You set the tool for 6″ in two different places (the front, and the side that you actually use to do the punching). The punch itself is magnetic and attaches to your paper in the correct place every single time. You push down and punch once, and then push down the circle and rotate once to punch again. I am seriously in love with the way this punch works and am going to search out additional cartridges I can use with it!

Once your circle is punched, form it in the shape of a cone and use adhesive dots to adhere the paper together.

Cone

Cut your white paper into small squares and form them into the shape of a cone. Adhere the sides together with an adhesive dot and trim the top so that you don’t see the top when you are looking at the cone. Drop down inside of the cone. The end will hang out a bit at the bottom. This will allow you to hold smaller candies inside the cone without falling out.

Cone For Candy

Tie a ribbon around the center and make a bow. Then you are ready to add your candy!

Valentine Candy Cone

I am going to definitely use this punch to create more Valentine’s crafts. It’s my new favorite tool! Enter to win a prize pack, including this punch, stickers, and more from Martha Stewart Crafts in the giveaway.

Egg Casserole Recipe

Egg Casserole

I decided to make egg casserole on a whim today because I had a pound of sausage that I had thawed and needed to cook. The egg casserole recipe that I used was adapted from a Betty Crocker recipe. I wanted to make it kid-friendly, so I decided against adding salsa to it and and kept it pretty basic. I always add either salsa or Cholula hot sauce to my own eggs once I get them on my plate.

Egg Casserole

This recipe uses Bisquick, which I happen to love using in my casserole recipes. Growing up, my parents used to make a cheeseburger casserole with Bisquick that was fantastic. It’s something that I’ve always kept in the house as an adult also, because it is so easy to use in both breakfast and dinner meals.

Combat Dry Hands With Chamomile Hand Cream by SwissJust

Camomile Hand Cream

It’s winter in Nebraska, which means as soon as the snow leaves the ground, we are back to the windy, dry climate that I have come to learn to adjust to. It’s amazing how the air outdoors can affect your skin, even if you aren’t out in the elements daily. I’ve noticed that my hands and feet have been very dry lately, and that even the water softener and two humidifiers we have don’t seem to be doing the trick. So, I’ve made the decision to incorporate some great products into my daily regimen so that I can have smooth, silky skin once again.

One of my biggest finds this year for hand and foot care has been the Chamomile Hand Cream by SwissJust.

SwissJustSwissJust was formed in a small village in the Swiss Alps in 1930 by Ulrich Jüstrich, and has since spread to sell products in 35 countries around the globe. The company prides itself in using natural products to aid in health and well-being. SwissJust products are sold by Independent Consultants and offer a lot of great opportunities for people looking to make extra income. If you are interested in this opportunity, please don’t hesitate to contact my consultant from her website.

Chamomile Hand Cream

Camomile Hand CreamThe Chamomile Hand Cream is one of SwissJust’s best selling products. This product comes in a 3.3fl oz tube and retails for $33.00.

The hand cream has a very light chamomile fragrance, meant to sooth and relax without overpowering your senses. Things with a heavy fragrance tend to bother my very sensitive skin, and I’m happy to report that this product has done nothing but improve my skin. Even when I haven’t used it for a few days, I can still feel the softness in my hands.

This products is said to create a “glove effect” to protect your hands from the elements. I’ve noticed that my hands have remained very soft even after I do daily activities, such as wash dishes by hand or clean the showers and sinks in our home. I’ve also used this product on my elbows with desired results. These dry winters often leave my skin cracked and it is nice to finally have a product that can work to protect my skin, as well as keep it really soft.

Another feature I liked from this hand cream is that it is not greasy. You can apply it and instantly feel a difference.

Additional Products

SwissJust has many additional products that you can purchase for health and well-being. I’ve heard wonderful things about their essential oils and I believe the next product that I am going to check out will be the Pedicream for my feet. I wear flip flops constantly and my feet are always exposed to the dry air. I’ve been using the hand cream on them and they have improved so much in the past few weeks.

What SwissJust products attract you the most? Please visit my consultant’s website or Facebook page to learn more about the products or the SwissJust opportunity. She said they are now looking for people in the Midwest!

My SwissJust representative has offered to give away one chamomile hand cream to a Midwestern Moms reader! You can enter until Feb 12, 2013 at 11:50pm, via the Rafflecopter box below. This giveaway is open to US Only and you must be 18+ to enter.

Closure by Kim Carmichael Book Review

Closure

ClosureClosure

There’s always the one…

He’s one person throughout life you think about every so often, the one who leaves his unique indelible mark on you, the person with whom you need closure.

For Margaret Collins that person was Mike Taylor. After he broke her heart seventeen years ago, she left everything she knew and reinvented herself. With a new home, a new look and a new name, Riley Williams is now an up and coming journalist given the assignment to interview a Mike Taylor. She never suspected he would be her Mike Taylor. With Mike having no hint of Riley’s true identity, she must decide if she will make him pay for sins he doesn’t remember committing, or if she can wipe away the past and be with the one man who she has always wanted?

About Kim Carmichael

Kim CarmichaelKim Carmichael began writing eight years ago when her love of happy endings inspired her to create her own. She has a weakness for bad boys and techno geeks, and married her own computer whiz after he proved he could keep all her gadgets running. When not writing, she can usually be found slathered in sunscreen trolling Los Angeles and helping top doctors build their practices.

My Review

Reading this book took me back to a time when I was 17 years old again and struggling with those first relationships. I think that all of us have a little bit of Margaret in us, and the need to have feelings we give be reciprocated. Riley was definitely out for closure, but often plans don’t quite work out like we think they will.

I enjoyed Kim Carmichael’s writing style and admit that I read this book very fast. I found myself not being able to look away because I wanted to know what happened to Riley’s plan.

I went into the story thinking I was going to dislike Mike, that I would relish in watching him squirm, however what I ended up feeling for him was much different. I actually felt myself rooting for the guy.

This book definitely contained the element of surprise, as I felt myself sitting on the edge of my seat yelling ‘NO!” or urging the characters to go after one another. I really enjoyed this read and can’t wait to see what Kim Carmichael comes up with next!

The Tale of Lucia Grandi: The Early Years by Susan Speranza

The Tale of Lucia Grandi

The Tale of Lucia GrandiBook Blurb:

When an old woman is asked to tell the story of her life, she tells an intense and poignant tale about growing up in and surviving a warring suburban family during the 1950s and ’60s.

Written as a memoir, each chapter describes a particular incident in Lucia’s life which shows the constant struggle between her parents and the perverse effect it has on her and her family. From her complicated and unwanted birth, to her witnessing a suicide at age 3, to her stint as a runaway at age 14, the story progresses to the final crisis where as a young woman she is turned out of her house and banished from her family forever.

Told in breathtakingly beautiful prose, this is a powerful and timeless story of a dying woman’s courageous attempt to come to terms with her past and the troubled family that dominated it.

My Review:

The Tale of Luica Grandi is a story written in the format of a memoir told by a 110 year old woman. She recounts events throughout her life that were deeply emotional and that also shaped her into a survivor.

As I became deeply immersed in the story, I began to really feel for Lucia because it seemed like she could never catch a break.

I really liked Lucia’s grandfather because he seemed like the one in her family that had unconditional love for her. Her own parents were horrible to her and it was just a heart-wrenching story to read.

I enjoyed Susan Speranza’s writing style in this novel. Although the book is long, it flowed nicely and the characters really came to life. I also liked how each chapter covered an event in Lucia’s life.

Puppy Chow Recipe, Valentine’s Day Style

Puppy Chow

My husband’s exact words to me today were, “If you could just go ahead and make puppy chow once a week, that would be great.”

Although I don’t make it once a week (I would cave on my diet if I did) I do try to make it around the holidays. My puppy chow recipe stores so well that I usually make a huge batch and can easily keep it in a closed container or even the plastic bag that I make it in.

Haven’t heard of puppy chow? It is a delicious snack that involves both peanut butter and chocolate coated Chex and is then covered in powdered sugar.

Puppy Chow

I’m warning you, this stuff is addictive.

5.0 from 4 reviews

Ingredients
  • 9 Cups Rice Chex Mix
  • 1 Cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
  • ½ Cup Creamy Peanut Butter
  • ¼ Cup Butter (I use Country Crock)
  • 3 Cups Powdered Sugar
  • ½ Bag M&Ms
  • ½ Bag Conversation Hearts

Instructions
  1. In a microwave safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter.
  2. Microwave 1 minute. Remove and stir. Continue to heat in 30 second intervals, stirring after each until the mixture is melted.
  3. Put the Chex Mix in a large bowl.
  4. Pour the melted chocolate over the Chex and stir, ensuring it is all covered by the chocolate.
  5. Pour the powdered sugar in a large plastic bag.
  6. Spoon the chocolate coated Chex Mix into the bag of powdered sugar. Seal bag and begin shaking to cover the entire mix thoroughly.
  7. Open bag to add your m&ms and conversation hearts. Mix.
  8. Enjoy!

New Year, New Schedule, New Love For Coffee #LightIcedCoffee #cBias

IcedCoffee

Working from home often takes self-motivation, organization, and a whole lotta coffee! I’m not shy in talking about my need for caffeine to make it through the day. Between animals, a toddler, running my business, and helping my husband with his, coffee is a necessity all day long! This year I am also continuing my journey toward more healthy living with a better diet and exercise.

This is why I am so excited about the new International Delight Light Iced Coffee. This product will be available in Walmart stores starting January 21, 2013.

IcedCoffee

I am often leery of purchasing the “Light” version of products because most often the taste is severely sacrificed. However, this is International Delight, and they are my brand of choice when it comes to iced coffee and coffee creamer, so I felt like I had to give them a fair shot.

And I’m SO glad I did.

I can’t tell a difference.

The Vanilla is still my favorite out of the two flavors of Vanilla and Mocha. Of course, I always choose vanilla in the vanilla vs. chocolate war. Yes, I’m that person. It is so rich and creamy and I feel it has more of that signature coffee flavor. Delicious.

IDLight

Taste is very important to me when it comes to an iced coffee. But, calories and fat are also very important in my journey for weight loss. International Delight Light Iced Coffee is finally giving me the best of both worlds. I am happy that I can have a glass during the day without having to add any extra time to my workout routine. Because coffee is one thing that I refuse to cut out of my diet. ;)

InternationalDelight

I like drink my iced coffee during the daytime, as opposed to the morning. It’s like my dessert. That nice little treat that I get while I’m working on my blog posts.

When do you drink iced coffee?

Well, first of all to keep myself on track. Goals help motivate me to get started! I set several goals for 2012 and most of them were ridiculous. Goals like: lose 100 pounds and read 100 books. Even though I didn’t meet those goals, I still lost 33 pounds and read 90 books. Goals are a good thing, even if you aim a little high.

Goals help move me to where I want to be personally and professionally.

I think this quote sums it up best:

“If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.” ― Yogi Berra

I hope you don’t mind me sharing my goals for this blog for 2013. I think you will be pleased with the amazing things we will be doing this year!

Goal #1: More Crafts!

I know, I failed miserably in the craft department this past year. That nonsense has to stop! I want to share things that are going to inspire you to create. I am going to start doing 1 craft per week for you. It might be something cool I see on Pinterest and want to share, or something that I’ve been hiding away in my yarn bag that is waiting to be finished. But, it is my goal to show you one craft a week.

Goal #2: More Food!

I think everyone is in agreement here! Food is always amazing. My husband and I recently discussed that we need to start making more meals at home and even canning this year. Do you all realize that I have been stock-piling cookbooks for years now? You’ll be seeing more recipes featured on the blog this year. I also happen to love taking photos of food, so this goal should work out wonderfully. I’m planning on trying to bring you 1 new recipe each week!

Goal #3: PhotoPalooza!

I have a nice, professional camera and take photos all of the time, so my goal is to show you more photos in 2013! Hopefully I’ll be able to sneak off and travel to some cool places in the Midwest this year and journal my trips with photos!

Goal #4: This Year I’m Packing My Bags

To travel, of course! I have a trip planned in February already to attend a paranormal mini-con in St. Augustine, Florida, but I also want to attend a few blog conferences this year. I want to meet more of my blogger friends in real life and learn more about how I can bring my readers fantastic content!

Goal #5: Lighten Up and Show You What I’ve Got

By nature, I’m a funny person, but I don’t feel that it comes across on my blog all that well. Sorry I’ve been so lame. In 2013 my goal is to bring more of my big personality forward to share with you and let you get to know me a little better. Hi, I’m Amanda, it’s nice to meet you!

Goal #6: Work Smart, Not Hard

Okay, so we all know that working smart and hard go hand in hand. :) What I mean here is that I will be doing a lot better with time management this year so that I can maximize my time while I’m online… so that I can actually enjoy some time offline. No one likes being online all day long. Especially now that I have 3 blogs and do additional freelance work on the side! Oh, and then there is that book that I am writing…

It’s always something.

How about you? What would you like to see from me in 2013? What are some of your goals for the year?

We Are Loving Mattel Dolls This Holiday Season

Merida-Gem-Doll

I was lucky to be able to review two new dolls from Mattel this holiday season, The Disney/Pixar Brave Gem Styling Merida Doll and the Little Mommy Doctor Mommy Doll.

Merida-Gem-Doll

The Disney/Pixar Brave Gem Styling Merida Doll retails for $19.99 and is perfect for fans of the movie Brave! She comes in her riding gown and with her bow and arrow. We love Merida because of her fiery red hair and this doll captures that beautifully! This doll is for ages 3 and up, due to choking hazards, and includes gems that your child can use to decorate Merida’s dress, cape, or hair. Her cape is gold and sparkly with accents to match the blue color in her riding gown. She is available for purchase on the Mattel website or in major retail stores.

Little-Mommy-Doctor-Mommy

The Little Mommy Doctor Mommy Doll is perfect for your little nurturer. My daughter loves to play doctor and I also feel like letting her play with the instruments, such as the stethoscope or the thermometer, help her understand what is going on when she visits the actual doctor. This doll includes the Doll, and Doctors Kit complete with stethoscope, thermometer, tongue depressor, reflex hammer, name tag, bandage, and syringe.

This doll does require AA batteries, which are not included, and is for ages 3 and up.

Your child is able to check the doll’s temperature, bandage her, check her reflexes, and her heart with the tools and the doll will actually respond and interact with your child. My daughter loves this doll and the fact that she is interactive and actually makes sounds and says phrases back to her.

Be sure to check out the entire line of Little Mommy dolls on Mattel’s website. Although this doll doesn’t appear to be currently available through Mattel’s website, you can find her at Toys R Us for $59.99.

Enjoying Memories Around the Dinner Table

Darden

Some of my favorite holiday memories include sitting around a table with my family around Christmastime. I enjoy sharing the season with family and friends and exchanging conversation over a delicious meal. After dinner cleanup, we then get out the games and play, or help the kids play with the gifts that they receive.

One of my favorite gifts to give during the holiday season are gift cards. Being a mom, I know the importance of being able to go out and share a nice meal with your spouse or your whole family. My husband and I were just talking and realized that we haven’t been out on a date for a nice meal and a movie for almost 3 years! I’d say we are long overdue!

We are going to be enjoying our Darden Gift Card to go out for a nice meal this winter.

Darden

Something I love about the Darden website is that you can purchase a card to use individually at so many great restaurants, or allow the recipient to choose which one they want to go to! One of my favorite restaurants of all time is Red Lobster. My husband enjoys going there when the Endless Seafood promotion is going on and I really enjoy their biscuits. They are melt in your mouth good. We have so many great memories of going to Red Lobster as a family and can’t wait to go again!

Red-Lobster

The Darden Gift Card also covers another restaurant that I have enjoyed visiting since High School – Olive Garden. Yes, there is a story behind this! Each year we went on a field trip for school right around the holidays and would always stop by the Olive Garden. That is where my love of their salad and breadsticks first began! I crave those breadsticks still! Thank goodness we have an Olive Garden close to home.

Olive-Garden

Longhorn Steakhouse is also a popular restaurant that is included on the Darden gift card list. I’ve never eaten at the Longhorn Steakhouse because ours was closed here in town, but I hope to visit the next time we are in a town that has one1

Longhorn-Steakhouse

For a limited time during this holiday season, you can earn a $5 bonus coupon for every $25 gift card you purchase at Oliver Garden, Red Lobster, or Longhorn Steakhouse restaurants. Whether you like to stay in for the holidays, or dine out, sitting around the table with friends and family are some of the best memories you can make!

From our family to yours, we wish you a Happy Holidays!
