Guest Post: The Light Tamer by Devyn Dawson

The Light TamerToday we are honored to feature a guest post by Devyn Dawson on the blog. A huge thanks to Devyn for the post and for giving us some insight on the characters in The Light Tamer!

Why is Caleb so perfect?

Jessie is reintroduced to a boy named Caleb Baldwin and he seems to be without any flaws. Why did you decide to write him that way? I’m not going to lie; I like the bad boy, and have always been attracted to them in books. When I came up with Caleb, I knew that Jessie needed someone that she could count on. Caleb recently lost his mom and that makes him drawn to Jessie. Light Tamers have more protection if they have two parents, when his mom died, it left him vulnerable. I wanted a character that girls would say to themselves “I want a guy like him.”

Amber is a lively character, where did you come up with her?

Oh, I love me some Amber. I think she is my favorite character I’ve written to date. She is sassy and sarcastic at the perfect moments. I knew that the story would need some comic relief; and I knew that teens identify with sarcasm the most. Amber is guarded with her feelings since her brother died in a surfing accident the year before. I too lost a brother when I was a teenager, and I dealt with life in much the same way she does.

Jessie’s dad is an alcoholic in the book, that’s pretty heavy. A lot of teens deal with alcoholic parents and friends, did you?

No, I never had to deal with that in my life, but I had friends that did. I would see what it would do to them, and I’ve had many a late night conversations about it. Jessie’s dad drinks to chase away his desire to drain her from her light. If I say more than that, it will be a spoiler. I gave Jessie an inner voice to speak what her thoughts are as the story is told. You’ll hear her thoughts about her image, about her dad’s drinking and how she feels about Caleb. It was fun going back to my teen mind and picking out the memories of my first kiss. I hope everyone has a chance to fall in love for the first time through Jessie’s experiences.

Thank you for having me on your blog. I am always excited to touch more readers. Happy reading!
