I was very excited to have the opportunity to review Liz Schulte’s new book, Choices. Schulte is a Midwest author and it has been neat to see her tie aspects of her books back to her roots. You can follow her on her Twitter / Facebook / Blog. If you haven’t had the opportunity to read one of her books, please take the time to. They are fabulously written and will hold your attention from the first page.
Choices, an Urban Fantasy, is Book 2 in The Guardian Trilogy. So, if you haven’t yet read book 1, Secrets, I recommend you start with that book first. There may be some spoilers in this review, so be warned and proceed at your own risk.
Choices begins with heroine, Olivia Martin finally coming into her afterlife after three long years. She is trying to accept her new talents as a Guardian, yet still holds on to her past as a human with Holden. When Olivia arrived into the Abyss, she was met by Quintus, her trainer and fellow Guardian. His attachment to her and need to protect her, along with her hiding her true feelings for Holden, keep secrets between them that prove to be dangerous. Olivia quickly learns of her special talents and the duo discovers that she has more unique powers than that of a regular Guardian.
Meanwhile, in Olivia’s absence, Holden, a jinni, throws himself into darkness to cope with the pain of her not coming back to him. Once he is given a higher position, he begins to absorb himself in work, yet still becomes distracted with thoughts of Olivia. Although Holden is a bad boy, he is a very likeable character because there are glimpses of hope that he has feelings throughout the story.
I won’t share too much more because I wouldn’t want to give away the ending, but I can promise that it is a good one that will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting to read Book 3!
The book itself is written from three points of view, which means that with the rotation of each chapter, the reader will enter the mind of Olivia, Quintus or Holden, the three main characters. Once I got used to the format, I loved it. I felt like it gave me the ability to get to know each character on a deeper level and allowed me to see the reasoning behind their choices with more clarity. They truly drew me into their story and I was hooked! I finished this captivating story in just a few short days and now CANNOT WAIT for the next book to come out.
